could you recheck the error you are getting, i have never heard of a degenerate triangle being found while running radiosity. are you sure this error is not "bad uv's?"

It's an error with the uv mapping done in 3dsmax. Something like "I don't like how this texture is mapped, so I'm not gonna let you run radiosity".
Import the created debug.wrl file into 3dsmax and map the surfaces that have the triangles on them.

You said you ran radiosity with sapien, that is why there is no .wrl. Run lightmaps with tool eg. tool lightmaps levels\mapname\mapname mapname 0 0.9. Then you can look at the .wrl.
