But I assume that we have right? Everything we make here is owned by them right?

Except that it actually isn't.

Though what you're thinking about has the same problem SOPA has, both are written so incredibly vaguely that they could mean just about anything :]

You guys who are thinking that the American government is going to shut down these sites are wrong.
Most of them (including this site) will be shutdown by their owner.

Basically this. The government can pass bills, but they're not so stupid as to go mad with enforcing copyright laws. They won't shut down sites without asking copyright owners first. They just have the right to if not doing so would inconvenice either government agents or the general public. Even if they are fat Americans, they have brains...

Megaupload's logo is pretty bad. I don't blame them. Such a bad logo designer should have been arrested long ago. Making bad quality logos for big companies is most certainly a worthy crime.

(I am just kidding btw. I know some of you people lack a sense of humour)

E: Wow, just read up on Megaupload's court sentence. Over 50 years just for copyright infringement?! That's insane. That is total theft of freedom. Copyright infringement shouldn't all be ruled by what's written down on paper. Most copyright infringement's actually things that shouldn't matter anyway. -.-

I don't see why Halomaps would be taken down. Microsoft supports Halo fan sites and Halomaps is effectively a fan site. If the government tried to take Halomaps out, Microsoft would probably intervene in order to gain public attention. Their marketing team has brains, believe it or not.

even if the copyright holder doesn't care about the violation the bill in essence makes it criminal anyway. Right now copyright violations are civil law not criminal (only becoming criminal when costs become high) and it is up to the copyright holder to make a civil claim to shut down a website. Under the proposed bills the government can and must take action.

We Win, I knew this would happen actually. It really was quite obvious. even if the Feds tried to do this, what would stop us? Were greater than what they could ever be. We'd top them for sure.

From Wikipedia:

Megaupload was an online Hong Kong–based company established in 2005 that ran a one-click hosting online service of the same name, along with its sister services. The site was shut down by the U.S. Justice Department on January 19, 2012 during an investigation into alleged copyright infringement,[3][2][4][5] leading to what activist group Anonymous calls "the single largest Internet attack in its history".

They forced the company to close it, since it's in breach of copyright law.

However the other 4 members of MegaUpload that weren't arrested, have brought the site back online...

You just have to find it ;) (It's just an IP address, with no domain)

How can the American government force a (Chinese?) company to close?
I am a little confused.

Although its incorporation was located in Hong Kong, the company did not operate in Hong Kong. From 2009 onward, users with Hong Kong IP addresses were banned from accessing the site.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaupload#Unavailability

From what I'm able to find the actual server is located in Seattle, WA.
Look here for all of the technical info on the site:

The Real Site.
http://109.236.83.66/

The original MegaUpload UI is usually surrounded by the words, but it hasn't showed up since a couple hours ago.
The new site is hosted in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

And they shouldn't go to jail. The idiots who upload pirated content should go to jail.

I have GIGABYTES of stuff on MegaUpload, and for damn sake, 99% of every damn tutorial on youtube, requires downloading something from MegaUpload

EDIT: Also the server isn't located in Seattle. A company called Cogent, ruled the domain name http://www.megaupload.com/ and in 1 day, without the traffic of MegaUpload, they lost 19% in business, biggest drop in their history of business..

That Loss of Business = Multi BILLION Dollar Lawsuit.
We're talking 50,000,000 downloads a day, PETABYTES over PETABYTES.

Edited by iHalo on Jan 20, 2012 at 11:38 PM

EDIT 2: Also, Pepzee the site you posted is BS. It's just an image. The actual compromise page is composed of HTML, and each badge is an image. It is also fullscreen, that is simply a BS screenshot.

Go find a site that has been shutdown, that doesn't retain any original content.
MegaUpload right after the shutdown was like this, now it doesn't load.

Also the online poker sites that were recently closed down show images of the banner, but are only in image form because it's required by law to show, but they wanted to keep their original site still visible, but the servers that run the game are stopped indefinitely.

And why are you asking for proof, when you don't even have any yourself?

Go to any IP-tracker on the web and enter in the actual IP adress of MegaUpload, they all link to Seattle WA. Everyone I have used anyway, but you check for yourself and if you find any please show me. All of the ones I have used link me straight to Seattle, WA.

This has nothing to do with what I'm talking about.. Lol

I stated all the domains are ruled in Seattle by Cogent, I already said that.

The bold is what I'm talking about. You said the server wasn't in Seattle. I apologize if I'm not clear, all I want to do is learn and I think there is a communication error between us and we're talking about different things.

ihalo i have been doing a bit of looking around aswell and that ip you state is the blurred out ip in my other post, so this is a fake site you are going to.

edit: also just so that you know what i'm saying is for real, do you not see the typo?
since when is phishing spelt pishing?
phishing is the act of stealing personal info, pishing is the act of urinating,
amongst other things.

Megaupload's managers should be released from jail, and every single TRUE deliberate and evil pirate on the planet should be given 50+ years in jail instead.

Good plan Jaz.

Seriously you should be president.

Your amazing plan would not only put everyone in the USA at the mercy of the games/record/movie industry, like they were in the late 1900s, it would kill almost all content creation taking place on the internet.

Piracy is the only thing standing between everyone, and the old days when everyone was at the mercy of the entertainment industry. Do you really want to go back to those days, and eliminate everyone's only recourse if an industry decides not to play fair?

I see piracy more so as demos. If I really enjoy something, I'll go out and buy it later to support it. I think alot of other people could agree with me, but you can also argue, indeed, that some people souly pirate things and then never do go out and support it.

The reason people wanted this to end is becuase they want there money, which they do indeed rightfully deserve, however honestly there probably pretty well off for what there getting when it isn't pirated.

Politicians didn't get where they are now because of stupidity. About this specific matter, yes, they may be uneducated, but the whole notion that we're somehow better than people who've had over 30 years to think about life and learn from it is ridiculous.
Edited by Tiel on Jan 21, 2012 at 12:40 PM

Yeah, they get there through lies and unlimited amounts of money donated by massive corporations. Older =/= wiser. My little sister understands that a website can't be held responsible for a user's actions, especially a site as big as megaupload. Something is bound to get through eventually. Yet somehow our members of Congress don't seem to understand this.
