So, Halo CE Anniversary has been made. Pretty much remade bsps/tags and Reach assets. It's using the original engine (available on PC) and the Saber 3d engine (available on PC through the game timeshift). If someone gifted in programming could eliminate a few restrictions and make the engines run in parallel, would it be possible to similarly improve the CE experience like 343 Industries? I know the answer is probably no, and I know it's unoriginal, but what the hell.

They'd need the source code for the original engine, and the MP is Reach's engine.

Yay Petera's temporarily back.

Well, perhaps somebody could have the CE engine, run a newer graphics engine somehow, and keep the same crappy Halo netcode. I think it would be more practical to simply use our engine and try to stretch it out as far as possible. This is of course one of the most inspiring things about Halo Custom Edition; seeing what can be achieved even with outdated technology.

In order for someone to pull off the suggested above^^

You would require the source for Halo CE,Halo 1.

There are some undesirable ways to make "small" changes but no one would do this.

I honestly believe the CE blam! engine is fantastic, and can stretch far, but the lighting and models never seem as realistic as in later engines. The multiplayer code is just fine and dandy to me.

So, would it be possible to reverse engineer the source code?

And (yes I know this is unpopular and idiotic, but I've never used it before, and am interested because I'm now learning computing skills such as Visual Basic, javascript and C++, which should increase my knowledge of halo modding by adapting certain aspects) would Open Sauce help in any way?

It would of course be possible as 343's done it but you would likely need Halo's sourcecode, which we're probably never gonna get.

The Blam custom edition engine is worth MORE than 800,000+ lines of assembly. It would take a very long time to translate to c++ or other things.

this community seems too asset-oriented as opposed to engineering-oriented to take up a project like this

To say nothing of the fact that it is a direct violation of the copyright and the legally binding End User License Agreement, everyone who installed the game agreed to, to reverse engineer or modify the source code in any way. But really who the heck cares about a potential lawsuit with a multi-billion dollar corporation who has more lawyers at their disposal than most people have extended family members?

Yes, it is. There was an incident I believe a long time ago right around/before I joined where someone had done it, but was caught. Can't remember all the details though...

We could just challenge them to a Halo CE Team Slayer match. Winning team pwns the law. xD

I don't mean to challenge Dennis here, but there's no need for sarcasm. I am but an ignorant fool, and I don't want to cause any trouble. I didn't know that there could be legal problems if you reverse-engineer it. I'm asking possibilities, not saying "ooh I'm gonna do this, screw the law".

I had a look here:

http://forum.halomaps.org/index.cfm%3Fpage=topic&topicID=33748

and, unfortunately, we can't get the source legally. I guess that means that the engine can never be improved beyond using open sauce then.

The only other solution is having other Halo games ported to PC. *Halo Reach cough*
But there's almost no chance of that happening...
