As I'm sure most of you are fully aware, Halo: Custom Edition requires a product key, supplied by a copy Halo PC. But as the game becomes progressively older, there are fewer and fewer places a nostalgic gamer can get his Cheeto-covered hands on a hard copy.
...So what happens to us?
We've lost plenty of CE gamers over the years, and gained many as well. But eventually the supermarket shelves will be cleared to make way for new games. No more Halo PC means no more product keys. And no more Custom Edition. Does this mean the trickle of new players will simply cease, letting the current community slowly dry up? Seems like an anti-climactic way to go. But what do we do about it? Is there any way to negate the need for a product key and a disc (without pirate-ness)?

I can still buy copies of AoE2 at Staples, you really don't need to worry about the game dying because people can't buy it.

Even if it stops being sold on the shelves, people will still pirate it, or people will look for it on ebay or other online sites. I'm sure Amazon.com has more than a few copies of Halo 1. But also, someone mentioned seeing AoE2 at a store (don't rememer who, too lazy to check), and it's the same here for me. The original game was released in 1999, and the expansion in 2000. And it's $20 here for me as well.
E: they might also be like Rockstar and release all their older games for free. Last time I checked, Rockstar had the original GTA hosted on a site for free. Edited by UnevenElefant5 on Jun 14, 2011 at 10:44 PM

well with halo anniversary coming into full swing soon they are prolly gonna try to promote original halo so players can experience the original game and the flashy new version
one of those play the orginal game that started it all
sorta like those "read the book that inspired the movie!!" type adds
this is a guess, of course, but I honestly doubt they won't try that marketing scheme on us, I mean, have you ever been on halo waypoint?

But the amount of pirates for any game will exponentially increase for years to come. This coming from a pirate ^_^;
Don't worry, I bought a legit copy of Halo...albeit from WalMart back in '03 (before that I had a pirated copy :x)...and it was $40. Guess it would be about $50 now that the Canadian dollar is stronger (than the US?). Ah well.
I wouldn't be surprised if Bungie/343i reintroduced the original Halo (Xbox and PC/Mac - ah, who am I kidding, nobody'll buy the Mac version XD) to grab more money. Hell, I bet with Halo Anniversary, they'll include all the maps provided with the PC version of the original Halo...that is, IF they decide to do so :/

They stopped selling Halo PC here in New Zealand, although they still sell Halo 2 PC. And if you can find Halo PC, they're all used. (Not that there's anything wrong with used games, but I think I still like new ones...)

The Anniversary version is just a visual overhaul that can even be turned off. If you do, it's exactly the same as the original, game-breaker pistol included. One has absolutely no reason to buy the original at the same time as the anniversary. Also, the trickle of new players coming in are mostly pirates anyway. It won't affect them.

There are no new animations in Anniversary. It's just a graphics overhaul, everything else is the same, yes, even the always 24h curved hands/fingers.
