Do these tools cause open edge errors? because when I use these tools on my bsp's, I tend to get a lot open edge errors.

Neither of those tools, if used properly, would be the cause of open edges.
I can not imagine why they would.
Maybe try bridging between 2 simple cubes see if that creates open edges, it should not.
Also try deleting 1 side of a simple box, then re-creating it, see if that makes open edges, it should not.

Hmm, thanks i'll have to try that when I get 3ds max reinstalled.
