I dunno, Sel, not everyone can pursue video game endeavors. If I had music in one hand and halo in the other, I would choose music as well.

He's perfectly capable of it, his parents are purposely restricting him, if he wants to pursue it there is 0 reason why he shouldn't be allowed to.

First off, I am flattered that people enjoy my music! And I am definitely pursuing that career; I'm writing music for a feature documentary at the moment.
Dennis, I used to agree with the philosophy of hyperfocus, but I think that the mind should bounce between two or more things in order to be stable, or for lack of better words, not bored.
Especially in the arts, where the workload varies heavily. Not only that, but getting into mapmaking/developing is a good way to learn about the processes that my future boss (game developer, perhaps) might be going through ;)
Wonderful comments, and I guess I'll ask for them to remove the controls for my birthday present or something.

Just because it's their decision to make doesn't make it any less terrible. They are not limiting him to "this" one thing as you say just limiting what he can install on the PC. That is not the same thing. We also do not have the full story. We don't know if he asked or how he asked for more permissions on it, we don't know the history of his actions, we don't know if this is he first PC or if he as abused privileges, or if he has gotten viruses in the past or how much it cost them for the PC or if it had been repaired and why. There is so much we don't know about the situation that to make any declarative statement about it is foolish. There are reasons why his parents will not allow him to install software on the PC and we don't know them because he most likely either hasn't asked in the right way, hasn't told all of it to us or disagrees with it. There is a reason. I am not saying if I agree or disagree with it because we just don't know what it is.

Eh, life is worse for my friend. Banned from computer indefinitely as a result of one Parent-Teacher interview.... he's not even that bad, just talks a lot in class. Ad he's almost 16... I also think parents should not restrict their children from pursuing whatever career they like, unless of course it's illegal, or it's dangerous, in which case it is reasonable to restrain for their own protection.

I agree heavily, IcePhoenix.
I created a Linux Live CD (Ubuntu), but the autorun is compiled into a file with a .exe extension, so I can't install anything.

Hyperfocus is too much. I'd die in it, but if kids can handle it then good for them. What you should do, nusua, is talk to your parents, #1. Tell them you want to expand your horizons, and treat Video-Gaming as an art. Show them a video of Dear Esther or something to prove that video gaming is an art, not just a medium for a focus on killing and guys to look at 3-dimensional hot girls. The way you use liveCDs is by rebooting the computer with the disk in the drive. It loads the operating system on the disk instead of the one on your hard drive. Since your using ubuntu, it will bring you up to an option screen after loading, install, or try (try is the liveCD option, other one is giving yourself a new OS)

relax guys, i know how you feel nusua, my parents didnt lift parental controls on my comp until i got into my freshman year in high school which was like roughly 5 to 6 years ago. its not a bad thing you can still do stuff surf the internet.
keep on pursuing what you think is right and what you want. if you want the parental controls to be taken off ask your parents nicely make sure you tell them what you are doing even if it gaming, parents like honest kids vs dishonest kids.

that doesn't work for everyone. my friend, for example. anyway, i'm pretty sure nusua's already in high school at least, so he'd feel worse. it is a bad thing to be incapable of accessing mapping tools when it's your hobby.

Since you said you can't run ".exe" you can probably try changing the extension to .com (I know it sounds ridiculous and it becomes an MS-DOS executable file, but there's no harm in trying).
Not to bash SeL or anything, but if I did what he suggested, then my parents would be thoroughly convinced that my computer is making me "crazy" and that would spell the end of my computer days(my parents are a bit "off," but they're still good parents).
I also agree with Dennis.
Btw, love your music.
-EDIT- Sorry but it seems as if the MS-DOS application actually uses cmd to get to Haloce :S Edited by Daku on Jun 5, 2011 at 01:41 AM

Actually yeah, I've been treated like that before. Also, is it really a good idea to help him sneak bypass his parent's devices against their will withouth them knowing?

Though they didn't have parental control on it (not even sure if it existed back in the day), so occasionally we would sneak on a game of red alert 2 or counter-strike Bought my own laptop when I was 18, got into Halo CE a year later. Obviously from then on I decided what went on with this laptop Ah yes, this was one cool story, bro. Inspiring stuff!

You mean following your heart, that is crazy! First of all, he never mentioned that his parents do not want him to not take on the career of a Video Game designer. Read the OP again... His parents just used parental controls because they don't want him to break their stuff and as a result, he can't use tool(though the OP was kinda unclear. Can you still run Halo?). Second, the fact that he can still use the porn infested internet where there will always be a porn website that is overlooked means that he has a hell lot more freedom than you'd think he does. You should be thankful that your parents are concerned over what you are doing with your computer. My parents who do not really know how to use a computer so they never installed any programs to protect me and as a result, I was introduced to porn or hentai in my case at an early age - 8 I think. Seriously, just talk - tell them about your problem. Why is it so hard to just...talk? -Zekilk

As I said in my edit, the method I proposed uses cmd so it wouldn't work for him anyways. Besides, he did say he wants to play halo, and we all here love halo, don't we? There's not much wrong with that, is there? ;)

Oh, dear. What an amusing find this was. Definitely a relook at an example of a complete offtrack of motivation towards my musical aspirations.
I rarely post in online forums anymore, but this warranted my attention.
Apologies to anyone who is still annoyed or insulted by my sudden excuse to complain about parental limitations, and many thanks to those who I see were strikingly kind and complimentary. Safe to say this might as well be my last post on here. To those who are still curious about the progress of my work or have questions regarding composition, feel free to visit my home page.
Please, if a moderator could generously close this topic; I would greatly appreciate the act of doing so.

Regards, Phillip Lober If you are going to have this topic closed then there is something I would like to say to you first. I just saw this topic for the first time and WOW your music is incredible. If you ever got into game development your music could make a game truly great. Many people underestimate the value of music in video games, in my opinion it is even more important than in movies. Anyway, heres hoping your music is in a game someday, sorry to see you leave the community here.

I know this is late but I completely disagree with Dennis.
Parents should be guides, they should not control what their children do and they should certainly not lock down what they are capable of doing. This may lead to positive things, yes. However, such an act may also cause a child to become ignorant, ignoring the other arts. They may then become hated due to their ignorance in the future. No matter how good they are at what they do, they will have a very negative aspect to their personality which will take years to cure. You should always let children delve into whatever art they wish.
Anyway, since I'm a bit late, good luck to you anyway. About to listen to your music now but if it's as amazing as others have said, I seriously hope I get the chance to buy a piece of media containing your music. :)
