H3 SMG I have has dodgy 3rd person holding :/

That SMG has a bad offset, marines hold it and it's floating away from their arms.

You import the models through gbxmodel into 3ds max. Then you move around the #left hand and #right hand markers around to your likings. You may have to do this a few times. I am pretty sure some models have #left hand marine and #right hand marine, so if you are using marine animations, then you would move the marine markers around.

Simply use Gmax, its free.

Yea, Gmax is actually a largely underestimated program. For modding a game like Halo Gmax actually has pretty much all you need (sure 3ds is nice, but is you havn't got it then Gmax is more than sufficient.)

I used to use Gmax all the time.

It's especially useful in this instance. TheGhost's Bluestreak scripts makes it easy to import and export a model and have it look exactly the same.
