Can gmax open a 3ds file for editing?

I guess I'll answer it.
If I recall, gmax can open a .3ds file, just not a .max. If you can't, ask a person nicely if they can export it in .obj or .gmax for you.

EDIT: Just checked, yes, gmax can import .3ds files. To do that, go to 'File>import' then select your file.

Yeah, well I don't want to have to pay money for 3ds, and the trial version would expire :(

It seems whenever I try to open a .3ds file, it gives me an error about how it can't read the file.

you are using the import option,right?

edit also check that obj is selected in file types,if you don't see the file.

Oh, yeah, I was using "open," not import.
