I was wondering what baking a weapon was, and if there were any tutorials out there.

So much irrelevant bs on latierally baking things. What is baking as a modelling term? I'm also wondering the same thing. Edited by IcePhoenix on Jan 21, 2011 at 11:10 PM

thank YOU ice. Ha ha. I am laughing so much at the lame oven jokes. (not) anyway. I meant how to bake an actual high poly gun into low poly. do you use some kinda special program?

bumpmaps are different, bumpmaps are a way to try to make textures look better and to sort of create the illusion that there's depth to the texture by use of light (best way i can describe it) http://www.earthenrecords.com/bumpmaptut/intro.htmbut,they're asking about baking models, which don't know much about either.

You bake a model in 3ds max. Firs tof all you have to have the highpoly version AND the lowpoly version of the model. You unwrap the lowpoly model and give it UVW coordinants. When that is done you add the projection modifier and make the cage surround the highpoly. Then you bake the details of the highpoly to the lowpoly. If you bake normal maps, what it does is bakes the light details from the highpoly to the lowpoly. It does this by looking for the details from the normals of the lowpoly. That is a messy reply actually but that is basically what it does. Edit: Here made an example, top is the highpoly and bottom is the lowpoly. The lowpoly has got wireframe on and normal maps on which are baked from the highpoly above. Edited by anonymous_2009 on Jan 24, 2011 at 09:54 PM

I do this a lot though it's not much use in halo CE as you could never properly use the textures it creates.
