People want crit, people don't want a person with a stuck-up attitude using demeaning words as "kid" though, kid :L

I gave crit, he cried, I insulted. typically scenario, i don't always insult instantly unless they cry, unless of course they are full on idiots.

Although my first post contained LIGHT insults if you wish to take them that way, but its all valid crit and telling him to start over is valid crit as that is what he needs.

So now you all be fag ends and gang up on me ay? lol, well enjoy your selves, I don't care seeming as my first post was all valid crit and he started crying over it.

You lot are a joke :L and you really think that article bothers me don't you?

Crit: This map is ok, but you could smoothen up the edges of the cliffs though.
You: UR RUINING UR LIFE WIF HIGHTMAPS!!! >:O

Erm. . . . NO. I said nothing of the sort, quit exaggerating.

"it's pretty bad, you should learn how to heightmap with various shades of grey"

hunter:
"I hope this is a joke. start over. :L"

So, you take one part of my post which is more or less the only little insult if you wish to take it like that, lol. Fail.

so when someone get's some crit and wether or not they take it on the chin(which he has),you just take advantage and rip into to them?

and you want to judge people over the internet as to wether they are idiots or not?

damn man what's that all a bout?

You should write film scripts as your pretty good at making up characters.

Martyn and assassin, your attitudes are atrocious, you are the bottom feeders of this forum.
Funny enough that you , Martyn, a vastly skilled modeler (who has a set, because he grew a pair) are being lumped in with a new guy who cant do anything (even get a simple box map ingame) and does not learn when to keep his mouth shut.
You have been told by countless "valued" users, that if you continue to run your mouth at the newer users because of their lack of instant skillz, you will alienate yourself.
Neither of you offer anything to this forum.

A map doesn't need to look pretty to be fun.

A map has to attract an audience to make it fun and enjoyable to play. It is EXTREMELY hard and can only be done by experienced and professional game designs to make a game fun but not visually pleasing.

Sounds to me that you have been spoiled by all these next-gen graphics. You're saying it needs good graphics to be fun - graphics are always a plus, but graphics and fun are ALWAYS on different levels.

I hope this thread is a joke and you are still working on the map as at the moment all you have got is a heightmap and some scenery... All a heightmap does is use the white and black values on the bitmap to change the depth of the vert's in max.

By the looks of it you have just painted a quick squiggle and stuck it in max, no greys have been used to give the heightmap variation, just white and full black.
If you insist in ruining your life and use heightmaps then at least put efffort into painting them by using a variation of grey's to make realistic cliffs and maybe even clean it up in max.

All modifier's in max should be applied to the mesh and then cleaned up, they are there to help you not do ALL of the work. Computer's don't make good decisions on where to place edges ect when such tools are use.

I suggest you delete what you have, start over and put some effort into it...

All BOLD is valid crit, okay I admit to slight insults where the text is not bold, but they are minor and to be hurt and insulted by them is pretty weak tbh.

And RED is not intended to be an insult but rather words being used to say how much using heightmaps like that can be bad.

There's about four mean troll demoralizing this map. He's not a professional, and this is his first map.
I only suggest you fix up the bsp, and keep trying regardless of what people say.

Oh, and people, don't quote this post and assume I meant to say anything else.

that's way better and fair, height maps are bad to use yeah, but when someone's just learning and go for a basic tutorial then that's what the user get's taught, hardly his fault the the basic tutorial showed him a heightmap, links have been given to far better ways to map and to learn new things.

One thing, you probably shouldn't base all your arguments around one game. And two, Notch isn't a millionare. Substantial sales, yes, but from what I've seen he hasn't broken 100,000 yet.

considering the game is has sold 600,000 copies, at 15 usd, I doubt you know what you're talking about. 100,000 is way too low.

lol, he is talking to me, cause i usually only appear to post a model that either i dont release or gets lost in the bowels of my harddrive. and i just use that image as a base, then edit the mesh extensively. :P and im off to my dungeon of models!

gimp will work just fine and it's free. you don't need fancy tools from an expensive program like photoshop to make a blob of white on black

Wait, so a heightmap also takes how dark the blob is and turns that into how much higher/lower the respective area should be?

He is not a professional so he can't make a map with them as they are used incorrectly. I'm sure a professional could paint a good heightmap, as usual reality has been blown apart.
