I have a friend, codenamed "Aiden" and he is a sniper. He rarely misses his target if it wasn't me he is shooting but he does not aimbot dammit. It is this nooby misconception that causes him to change to Counter strike(not that the game is bad.In fact,it is rather addictive) . Anyway, most of you may have noticed this but besides the fact that sniping takes a hell lot more training compared to 5 hours of gaming a day(its remarkable that he is still better than me in studies despite this), snipers in halo and other FPS games can snipe anywhere while moving whereas real snipers seen in movies,in animations and on a documentary can't move while sniping.Furthermore, in order to get an accurate shot, the distance is pretty large and may require them to camp on a high point like on a mountain. This can also be seen in sniper AI behavior. This makes you wonder, what are the characteristics of a sniper rifle and/or sniper in the real world that prevents from them to do things like snipers and/or sniper rifles in an FPS game?Is it because of the recoil or something?

It's because of the high recoil, and the fact that while moving, you won't be able to aim right unless you have skill, Zekilk. Edited by assassinchief106 on Nov 21, 2010 at 07:10 AM How did you know my name!!!! Oh wait...oooohhhh now I remember. I made too many names, I really should just stick to one or two. seriously? you don't know the difference between real life and video games?
unlike FPSes you don't aim into the center of where you look, your body has involuntary movements that you can't control
try sprinting and aiming with a nerf gun, you ain't gonna hit what you want

Wow I just answered my own question there...or did I?

Someone needs more education.
Snipers in real life have many differences from video games. In real life, a sniper rifle is usually single load and shot. The person shooting must be still, almost always prone, in order to reduce body movement of the arms and legs. When aiming a sniper rifle, the person must calculate distance, wind speed, gravity on the bullet, and speed of the target through trigonometric functions and equations. That person must then hold his or her breath to get a correct shot, lining it up with the measurements in the scope. One shot is your only chance. The target will notice if you miss them. Only if you have a great amount of skill would you be able to make a secondary shot. Every round must be loaded in most sniper rifles, so it takes a long time to use one.
In video games, you can run, jump, lead the shot in the air and get a kill. Wind speed is not taken into account, and only call of duty got the holding breath part right. In video games, sniper rifles can be used at all ranges, and can act as shotguns at close range.
That's the main difference list there.

Halo does have some slight realism to it. Lead is a very big part of sniping while playing online. Similar to actual sniping. Difference is, there is no involuntary movement (Like heartbeats, breathing and muscle twitching and spasms) gravity too. But usually, at the sort of ranges we use a sniper while playing Halo, gravity shouldn't affect your shots too badly, unless you're playing on like, I don't know, infinity and firing at the longest distances possible. So yeah, leading is just one part of it. The rest of it is unrealistic as hell.

Snipers in real life have spotters. Games don't.
My friend is a superb sniper and has been nagging me to join cadets (lol) so i can be his spotter.
In Games, You are the spotter (except for BF:BC2 it has some sort of realism on that point)
Oh and If you are the sniper, you just shoot (practically). The spotter tells you wind speed, wind direction, Target distance, etc., etc. In Halo 2 in The mission "outskirts" The first cutscene, You see a sniper with a spotter just before the camera pans to the pelicans

back again. That new campaign mod, totally worth it. BTW,I abandon the signatures some time ago. Maybe I will use them again. So anyway,I think I should mention another part of the question. What I want is to know this characteristic and use it to make FPS games more realistic.
So basically, the realism requires involuntary movement and more physics(thanks mooseguy for the details) and since the engine fails at most of those physics,I could make the sniper shake a little at idle and shake a lot when moving and set some "negative autoaim".
Thanks guys. Hmm, maybe I should use signatures again.Just the ones that will be last reply though.

Real Life: -Heavy -Recoil -Moving/idle sway (in regards to where you're aiming)
FPS: -No real weight -Varying recoil, but only "vertically" -Varying sway, depending on the game (IE: Halo has none, Call of Duty has varying amounts but can be stopped by "holding your breath")

Not to mention even if you have the rifle leaning on something so it won't move with your body, even pulling the trigger in the wrong way will move the projectile substantially.

1. No reticule, no bs no-scoping, you need to look through the sights to aim. 2. A sniper rifle isn't exactly light. Guns are rather suprisingly heavy for their size. 3. When you're running, you can NEVER keep the gun aiming in the same direction. It doesn't matter if you hold your breath or any other bs, your leg movement will make the gun's aim sway. 4. A sniper rifle is extremely intricate, there is no bullet spread, so it's all up to your aim. And your aim sucks when you're standing up. 5. Let's not even mention recoil, you can't even aim the gun without laying it down.

Welcome to the "I play Call of Duty, therefore know everything about guns" thread. This statement makes no sense. I did not explain these facts based on experience in the COD games. I have explained it based on knowledge that I have gained about real life sniping.

Bigtime. 2)I know little about guns which is why I ask a question. 3)I ask about real guns vs FPS ones and everyone posted facts about real guns 4)most of us here hate call of duty(or rather, it's community)
