blender, which is literally 50 times better in the new beta. im serious, look into it. used it and its pretty damn awesome.

3ds Max occasionally messes up the animation. I've got the Maya trial, and it's a breath of fresh air. I'm not sure if there is a .jms exporter for Maya though.

3ds Max for Halo, but pay.
Gmax, its free, but there are not many tools to be used in animating. Maya and Blender wont work, because there is no exporting to Halo from those programs. |

some high schools give those out... you never know. Mabye he has a sibling on college, or who goes to such a school.
