i'm not being a jerk when i say this, but why would anyone need a high poly gun? i know nothing about weapon modeling so i'm just wondering why you would put all that work into the model when someone is just going to turn it into a low poly weapon, it seems a shame to me

Because that is the way game's are made now. Highpoly models are made to bake the details into textures (normal maps, diffuse, ect..).

ALL professional game designs do this..

oh, thats pretty interesting, thanks for explaining that

I have a slightly updated origin/render...but Max isn't cooperating:
*good origins*
Originally it kept taking like, an hour to render, then all of a sudden it rendered this one out in mere seconds, then it went back to an hour .___________.

Well, when you're trying to make origins for a 10million polygon model... it tends to do that. I'm wondering how in the hell he was able to make this without his computer crashing a dozen times.

Well, with an M11x Alienware laptop :P

NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M 1GB (Approx. Total Memory: 2729MB).
4GB DDR3 RAM.
1.73GHz Dual Core Processor.

So it isnt too bad with it. Can still take a while to render though. And I left my rendering settings and lights in the scene for the person which asked me how I make my renders.

Just a bit :L Awesome specs. I want to save some money to build my own desktop, better specs then :)

And you got 64bit programs and OS? Otherwise the 8GB of memory will not benefit you much.

Nice work Anonymous. I like this one better than the nade launcher, simply because I'm a 'shotty.

Ok, so if I have

Intel GMA HD (Draws as much memory from RAM as it needs.)
8 GB DDR3 RAM
2.26Ghz Intel i3 processor

Would I be able to make models as high poly as this one?

Intel p55 integrated chip (which seriously is boss)
8 GB DDR3
3.2 Ghz Intel I5 processor

To answer your question Sergeant, yes, you are. If I was able to make all of my shiz on an old intel pentium 4... To say the least, I can render like, 50 times faster now haha.

And Also, Hunter, I use 64 so, its all good xD

EW, $700? Seriously, holy motha. That's too much for your specs haha. Look for the beige link to see what you can find when you look hard enough :P

God you people make me jealous.

Intel Celeron Dual Core 1.5ghz
2gb ram
Intel Integrated Graphics 350

Can run 2mil polygon models max without lag, and that's if I have Windows Classic setup. Don't worry, I'll get some big ass rig when I win the lottery (hmph).

Anyway, I found this neat little program nvidia melody (you must of heard of it). Since nothing ever works on this piece of junk, its probably going to completely skew up the model. But eh, its worth a try.

Speaking of which, how does one go about "baking" a model into a lower-poly one's texture set?

Unwrap low poly.
Rendering>Render to Texture
Set up settings.
Fix the cage.
Separate out mesh for proper baking.

High poly lets you bake the details into a low-poly version of a gun without sacrificing poly count.

I'm fairly sure that sub-d models are easier to make than low-poly anyway. You don't need to spend too much time refining details into the weapon, because the MeshSmooth modifier can do that for you.

When you bake the details into a low-poly model, you're saving yourself tons of time without sacrificing poly-count or quality.

ohhhhhh

Hey if you're making another model any time soon, any chance we could have a speed modeling video? like some of ICEE's (Was it ICEE or ODX? idk but it was someone). This'd be a win/win, you get to show us your modeling skills and we get to learn.

Maybe, dunno. Because I tend to not work on my models all of the time when I'm on computer. I usually do other things in between modelling.

Suppose I could maybe do a smaller model and record.
