This thread was started August 2010... I don't ever expect this to finish. Or at least not for another year.

Did you not read his posts? He said about a month, maybe two at max.

So, Gonzo, how's the map going? is tool liking it yet?
Edited by nick347b on Aug 3, 2011 at 02:11 PM

2 months is almost up, and I have yet to even see a single picture.

Why dont they tell the truth like "oh it'll be a couple more months due to school"

Or something like that instead of telling its around the corner, then when we get there, another 3 corners lie ahead, and were back where we started.

How are they supposed to know how long it'll take? You can't predict every setback and turn of events that might come up to hamper progress. There's no chart that lets you correlate the amount of things to do with the amount of time it will take to do them.

A suggestion for the carrier: You could keep it there (sort of) if you just had a sprite there. Then you just do something so that it can only be seen form one angle. Just a suggestion.

I am also assuming you mean you go to bed at 0000 (midnight) and get up at 0630. That's insane even for me.

Nope. I mean 1200. No seriously, I forgot quad zero. I'm tired as it is now, and I got about 10 hours of sleep. Maybe I shouldn't have stayed up til 0400 playing Starcraft (the first one)...

Ok, I'm going to attempt some work on Requiem now. I'm re-exporting the JMS just to be sure. I also transitioned from my MacBook Pro running Windows 7 via Bootcamp to a legit custom-built PC (courtesy of Newegg), so we'll see if anything changes (the JMS did export faster).

Mac's can run Windows decently, but they ship with such pathetic components that it make it a rather annoying option. I got the PC so I could alleviate the stress on my Mac, play games at actual fun FPS (Halo 1 and 2 at 60 FPS maxed! I had to force VSYNC otherwise I'd get awful tearing), and work on my map in a more reliable setting. I've had for nearly a week now, and it seems to be working fine.

Anywhos, I used bobbysoon's JMS exporter 1.04D, which was faster and for some reason produced two errors when I used his WRL importer. Now I find that difficult to believe, but i nonetheless tried to fix those two errors and am re-exporting to see what happens.

How much is it going to cost you? Mine cost me ~$900 Canadian. IMO, going custom is far better than buying off the shelf.

ON TOPIC: Can't wait for the map, still. I only hope that we can see some pictures within a few months - I know you're busy. Don't rush yourself.

Well...I fixed the two errors I received, but now there's another two to take their places. I have academics to do, but I suspect that even if I eliminate those errors, I'll just get another two...but we'll see.

To anyone looking to friend me via xfire: you MUST include a message with your invitation, otherwise I highly doubt I'll recognize you. I do not accept anyone unless i actually know who they are and communicate/need to communicate with them. Including a message is for your own benefit.

Be advised, Gonzo, that this is the guy who leaked the Lumoria 2 maps.

Don't worry. I wasn't just going to give him a download link that easily. He didn't even mention how he planned on fixing these errors, especially considering some great minds in the community are having difficulty fixing them.

Why not do it over teamviewer, disable remote control, so that the client can only TELL you how to fix things?

I do not think this was the right choice to make. Grunt is a very skilled member/modeler. He could probably fix most of the errors. But it is your choice anyway.

Gonzo, I am not much of a map maker or modeler, nor do I really know the guy, but if he says he can help you fix impossible errors without the need of the actual map file, by all means go for it.

Protip: don't ever trust ASP_Grunts or his close friends. I won't list the reasons here, just beware of this if you don't want your stuff leaked. There's plenty of other people who can help with any issues you may be having that are in fact trustworthy.

Why don't you just post your errors here publically. I'm certain there are many qualified people here that you haven't contacted privately yet.

How do you want me to format this list? Aside from coplanar warnings, all I'm getting are a buttload of 'overlapping' errors. I use quotes because, as it turns out, separately passing smaller sections of the map does not produce the errors at all. It's really annoying. I feel as if it's a scale issue, because my map is so large (yet is smaller than Coldsnap).

I'm now using JMS Exporter 1.0.4d and bobbysoon's WRL importer v2. As I said in previous posts, I'm only getting two overlapping errors at a time for some reason. Using Chimp's WRL importer, I get 171. I really don't know what else to say. I've rebuilt so many of the 'problematic' areas in so many different ways but I still get the same error, and all the various tests I've conducted (Scaling the whole map down by 175%, isolating small sections of the map, etc) do not produce the same errors. They produce unusual BS errors, such as open edges where there are no open edges (or even edges at all, in some cases).

I'm vexed. Thoughts?

Nowhere was I hating. Simply stated that:
- you cannot be trusted, which is true
- it is beneficial to post errors to as much people as possible, which he now has done

Quit bickering on my thread. PM each other if you want to get to kissing and making up.

I have a student license for Max 2010 (but haven't installed). I haven't tried for Max 9 because I was interested (when I got the license) in using the modern suite. That said, I have no idea if there is a compatible JMS exporter for Max 2010. My other issue is that I have not been able to get my map into Max AND preserve either ID's, smoothing groups, or both. Given the size of my map, it'd be a real hassle to have to remap and/or resmooth every face.

I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get my map into a format Max can read....m3d, .m5d, and the like all fail for me. There is no .P3D importer for Max that I can find, so what it all tells me is that the past hour I just spent has done absolutely nothing for me.

And here comes the suggestion which everyone hates yet seems to prove very useful. Copy your maps file (in whatever form its in) open the copied file in a different modelling program (IE - a CAD program) fix any known errors (like open edges) by going to the drop down menu where it says something like "connect touching [splines?]" then check for any errors that appear. After which you can export the file to whatever type you want and do with it as you please.

On a side note: i use TurboCAD v12 for just about everything; it has no 3d model size limit and the zooming capabilities make it nearly impossible not to see an open edge or to correct one. I've exported files from CAD and sent them to one of my friends who was using who knows what version of max for completion. This is only a suggestion but i hope it helps.

Well that's all fine and dandy, but the problem remains getting my map out of gmax and into a format that some other program will understand. I'm trying OBJ now, but I sacrifice my smoothing, and possibly my mapping. If there is some other way to get .gmax files out into a logical format, please...do tell.

Have you added a "Turn to Mesh" modifier before exporting? This has fixed alot of non-existent errors for me when working with .JMS files.

Odd. The JMS Exporter applies a Turn to Mesh from what I can tell. So I should manually apply a Turn to Mesh and collapse the stack? Any specific settings on that modifier?

Oh, and I exported a JMS to build a gbxmodel. Shame on me for not thinking of something so obvious...anyway, I have too many materials. Anyone know what the cutoff is? I currently have 50.
