If you have ever used a CAD program, those programs allow you to create half of your model, and mirror it to the other side.
Can you do this with 3Ds Max 8? Never could find a way too, but am curious to if it is possible

i can do it in zmodeler, but i have to export the model and reimport it to make it look right again, i think its something involving copying the half and then mirroring it

Model one side of the model along the X/Y/Z axis, then just mirror it using the mirror modifier. You can also use the symmetry modifier.
