Gmax is essentially a "trial" version of 3ds max, with many features missing. It also doesn't open .max files, which many people save their models as.

This is the truth.

Tougher to use. Less features. It works for tiny things, but it couldn't really hold its own if you tried a massive project with it.

It's also simpler to export from 3ds max as there are more exporters.

If you're a newb who only makes box maps, there seem to be few differences between Gmax and Max, but after you get into more complex forms of modeling, you'll find out that Gmax can onyl do basically 50% of what Max can do.

think what everyone is forgetting is "MONEY" thats the biggie for me anyway.. Gmax can handle 75% of what 3d's can do,.(minus lighting and a few others) you just have to script it to the teeth and basicly manualy drive it everywhere
Gmax is free and as far as I know, there are no cheap versions of a decent 3ds. If you find a cheap copy of 3ds, please, let me know where ok? not bieng sarcastic really "let me know"
Anything can look awsome, it's the attention you apply to detail. The "quality" of your projects depends on how much money and time you are willing to invest in said programs
Sounds like everyone eles has 3ds so, Where did you guy's pick up your copy's and for how much?

With Gmax you have no STL check, which makes advanced bsps frustrating. And scripting exporter is a pain when that happens. If you know what you're doing in chimp, though, you can get pretty good results.
