As a frequent user of Devmode, Console AND Skys the Limit, i'm a bit annoyed that 1.09 has cancelled all this. Is there any way I can get back to 1.08 and still be able to play online and use the utilities again?

What version changer will do is it will make you play with a 1.07ce EXE. that will allow all preivous apps to be used. Version changers new strings.dll will allow you to hop around to other versions, in this case 1.09ce.

It's a modified strings.dll that allows you to switch between versions 1.00-1.08 of both PC and CE. But obviously, since 1.09 was just released, it dosn't work for that.

edit) Higuy beat me to it :/

If you get the one by Omega, it does work, because you're setting the versions yourself. Someone needs to make a silent v. changer.

You should download the Original Halo UI Plus. It's version check is disabled and it also has the Halo 3 main menu music/sounds.

Before updating, copy the haloce.exe and strings.dll file to your desktop. Rename this copy of haloce.exe as haloce108, and strings.dll as strings108.dll.

Update to 1.09, then copy the updated haloce.exe and strings.dll to your desktop, and rename them haloce109.dll, and strings109.dll.

You now have both versions of the program to replace the haloce.exe and strings.dll files with. Just copy whichever version you wish to use from your desktop into the halo custom edition directory, and rename and replace the files with the original filename. It will at least let you play solo with whichever version you want.

I did the same with version 1.07, so I can use third person when I wish.

1.09 isn't mandatory, is it?
I heard Sawnose (the only guy at Bungie who still cares about us here on H1) say that it wouldn't break compatibility, and that 1.08 people could join 1.09 games since none of the actual game's files were changed, just a bug was fixed with the latest Internet Explorer security patch/64-bit users.

To have the same effect as version changer: Copy your 1.08 Halo CE .exe and your strings.dll in a new folder. Then update Halo to 1.09.

Replace the 1.09 .exe and strings.dll Halo tells GameSpy it's 1.09 and you can still use 1.08 apps now! woot!

This means that version # is in the registry.

.
yes it is. The reason it is mandatory in the auto=update is to NOT break compatibility.
