I am planning on a map that has 7200 polygons. Is this WAY too many? I need to decide how many polygons I am making with this map. It will be 2 1/2 square miles.

nah that's fine, in fact, i think you should add more detail lol.. some maps are like 40000 polies.. but they're at the top end..

It will be 2 1/2 square miles. Nah. That's a low amount of poly's, actually. Mine has more than that, and it's only Blood Gulch sized. You won't be anywhere near going over the limit with that; maybe ¼ of the way to the limit, at most. Hell, check the scouter level on Coldsnap. I guarantee it's over nine-thousand.

also portals can be used to create much more high-poly maps.

if it's single player, just go thaw out all your energy in detaills and poly's and cut them up in several BSP's
