Is there some sort of plugin for GMAX so it can load .max files,or a converter to convert .max files to .gmax files so I can open them, because I do not have 3dsmax and I need to open some .max files.

ok, matooba said a while back that gmax does not support .max because it is a free version of max.... 5 i think? (4.2 mb?) and having .max support could decrease sales of 3dsmax or something like that.
apparently matooba works for autodesk, so he knows whats up

also exporting as .3ds doesnt make open edges. think about that, a native file format that destroys the model (you know, 3ds max, .3ds, they kinda go together)
who told you that .3ds makes open edges?

using .3ds will not affect the model other than messing the smoothing and switching materials or ids. (from my experience)
