ok. here's an option on dealing with criticism... i know there are people that say "MY EYES" and cover themselves by callin it criticism. i also no there are people that see something like "EW. Polywastage" as an insult...
before replying on the message try to learn from it. if it mentions a problem with your project, improve on it. say... "Polywastage" google the word, ask what they mean, or act on it if you know what it means. if they just put "FAIL" ask them -how can i improve?- if they don't help you then ignore them. let them live in their sad lonely world. if they point out your mistakes TRY to learn from them. at least give them a positive attitude... if you reply something like "i post something for you and you spit in my face..." think about it...do you think a coach(teacher) will be nice to you all the time? when someone wants you to learn they will challenge you (probably by making you feel like trash) so you can try to prove them wrong. the most succesful people learn from being spit at.
and don't try to be a smartass, you know what i mean.
if you have other ideas feel free to post them. if you feel i am wrong tell me why, maybe the community could learn from your ideas.
cmon advancebo. im just waiting for you to be funny with your little "I APPROVE OF THIS MESSAGE" it makes you look cool ;) Edited by cellista92 on Dec 10, 2008 at 09:14 PM

Criticism is pointing out something that is wrong, and then telling them how to go about fixing it (or if you don't know how to go about fixing it, then describing exactly what might be wrong IN A NICE MANNER so someone else who might be able to fix it can explain it).
Being a jackass is just saying crap like "that model fails" and not giving any explanation whatsoever.
More of you meet the second criteria than the first. If you don't have anything nice to say, shut up. Who knows, the community just might improve and more crap might get done. Maybe Dennis won't always be on the edge of closing the forums down because of a few immature morons who can't keep their mouthes shut. This place is a great source of information, people. Don't frickin' ruin it for everyone else because you can't control yourself.
I have also seen a few cases where the criticism given met the first set of criteria that I detailed here, and the guy totally went off on a tangent and started acting like an idiot. Mouthbreathers like that also bring the site down. If you don't want criticism, don't post your work. At the very least, don't ask for criticism. Then when any is given, you can just ignore it.
Cellista, I disagree, to an extent. Sometimes, making someone feel like trash will discourage them. That's the last thing this community needs.
...on the other hand, if good criticism makes them feel like trash, then maybe they shouldn't be here. This ain't a daycare.

Don't forget that you can't give criticism unless you know what you're talking about. Most people don't know the first thing they are talking about when they attempt to give criticism.

double negative... you mean: Not knowing how to model does not mean you can't recognize bad modeling? same as: if you don't know how to model you can still recognize bad work

Critisism only became mainstream when people made it popular as a way to flame within the rules. Unless you know hat can be done to fix it an dhow to do it better and you're willing to explain, don't bother posting, unless the OP specificly asks for crit.

No, you don't get it. Teh community didn't care about critting work until people began to realize it was an easy way to upset people by being harsh yet obeying the rules. hen you all actually believed them when they said they were doing nothing wrong, and started doing it yourselves. If a person wants crit, they'll ask for it. The majority of people don't post their stuff becasue they want you to tell them how to make it better, they post it because they want to show people what they've done.

You guys assumed that people were criting to help, the reason why people use to crit was just to annoy and push other members buttons. People like Strider Vega Core, Frain, DA Ender are good examples of people that senior members of the community used the excuse of crit to pester.

regarding critisism via insults like making someone feel like trash ala coach style; it all depends on the balance between too much and too little. But remember to always factor in the part that this is the internet; people will read the text in their own way, whether this be for good or bad. IMO it is better to keep a neutral tone and attitude; it seems to work for me, however it may not work for you. Give it a try?

The majority of people don't post their stuff becasue they want you to tell them how to make it better, they post it because they want to show people what they've done. Interesting. This is the first time I've seen anyone that actually shares my viewpoint on this issue. That in bold is the truth. I mean, every time someone posts a model, tag, map, whatever, I hardly see compliments or just generic comments, I see criticism. Yet, why do people criticize? Even if you are using completely legitimate and helpful constructive criticism, why? Ask yourself. Are you actually trying to help the guy and nothing more? Or are you looking for an excuse to be the superior and satisfy yourself a little bit with the fact that you're making yourself look better than the guy while at the same time giving off the vibe that you are trying to be helpful? I'm going to be the better man and admit to this same thing. More often than not, if I help someone out with scripting or something, I do of course want to help the guy, but at the same time I have a slight urge to look smart. I mean, it's human nature. People want to be better than other people. I'm not ashamed to admit it, so what really goes on in the mind of the people that love to criticize, regardless of whether it's good criticism or downright insulting? Seriously, there's no need for it. Like Masters said, unless the person posting his content specifically says they want criticism or want to improve their work, chances are they don't want criticism. Pretty simple. We're not an elitist group looking for everyone to be good at everything, we're a bunch of random kids looking to have fun making maps for a game we all like. Yet sadly, more and more I see the elitist attitude. That has to change for the better of all of us. All I'm saying is: Respect others, Relax, Have fun.

Some people do just plain help people. I do the same thing as you, but mostly with scripting. I just get the feeling that when members constantly criticize, even if it is truly helpful criticism, it's still just to feel smarter or to show off knowledge or something. Being why I don't criticize, I just help. =) ... In fact, I don't see why everyone doesn't "just help". You can avoid criticism entirely and just get right to the point: tell them what to do to improve, fix, etc. Instead of saying: "Not very good so far. You really should move those vertices on the left there to create a more realistic cliff look. Right now, it looks like a flat wall rounded out, which isn't very good. Also, smooth out your terrain, it's way too pointy right now. Looks like someone could get stabbed walking there. A little work and it will be better though." ^ Which is helpful, no doubt, but it's still criticism. Say this: "Good start. Try moving those vertices on the left to create a more realistic cliff feeling. Also, smooth out your terrain, it will look much better." See? Take out all the negatives, and it isn't even criticism anymore, it's just helpful suggestions. Also, don't snap at me for unrealistic modeling criticism, I don't model xD. It's just an example.

I don't criticize, mainly because when it comes to things like models (which is where the criticism largely arises), I haven't the slightest clue what I'm talking about. I do more scripting.
Even if I did know what I was talking about, I don't usually criticize. I'll correct something, but I don't typically criticize anything. I'll tell them exactly what's wrong and how to fix it. That's how it should be.

Teenagers tend to be impulsive with little inhibition, mental or verbal filters and feel safe behind the thin veil of anonymity that the internet provides. The false sense of security coupled with their natural insecurities and desire for acceptance often leads to inappropriate responses as they try to assert and or find themselves. The art of measured and constructive criticism takes empathy, the ability to put yourself in the other’s shoes, and time to learn: Neither criteria are abundant in a young self-absorbed person.

I thought this community was screwed... The whole thing, it's messed up... It's a huge popularity contest on who can make the best models/animations... We can refer to that as art... I come on this game for fun, not for art... If I wanted art, I'd move to a better engine, like Crysis... 90% of people on this forum just like bashing each other... 60% of topics turn into flame wars.... Something like 20% of newcomers actually stay, due to the faggots on this forum... I wish this community would get their heads straight, and not try to be the"most popular" person in this community, besides, it's all virtual, it doesn't get you anywhere in life, so why try so hard to be the "most popular"? Who knows, maybe there is hope, I see a chance in a few of you, some of us need to step it up and fix this god forsaken place... Also, nice sniper Hunter Also, me KS made an awesomerific winpost, that I totally agree with

Once one person begins to criticize one thread, everyone jumps in. Once one person begins the flaming, then everyone joins in. It's a chain effect, and if we can get that one person not to begin the flaming, then no one will (I should rephrase that, but I won't).

I wish this community would get their heads straight, and not try to be the"most popular" person in this community, besides, it's all virtual, it doesn't get you anywhere in life, so why try so hard to be the "most popular"?Who knows, maybe there is hope, I see a chance in a few of you, some of us need to step it up and fix this god forsaken place...Also, nice sniper Hunter Also, me KS made an awesomerific winpost, that I totally agree with i used to think the same thing. those are not facts.the reason these people try to be popular in this "useless" community is because like everyone else, they wanna be recognized. and since most of these ppl dont obtain recognition in their afk life. this is their only place to go to.everyone has a chance. dont worry they'll grow from this. if you hadnt noticed, most of the people here are in the 13-16 age range.you're not the first person to post something as useless as that. people will just ignore you, life will go on, and others will be in our place.
