I open my texture in gimp, and I need to make an alpha channel.
If I duplicate a current one, it becomes black and white. If i make a new one, i can't get the colored image into it.
Can someone help with this process?

Oh.
Well, when the image is in 3ds max and ingame, it is still black and white...
How can I make it colored in game?

How can I make it colored in game? That is because your image itself is black and white. All the channels are only grayscale. The ones that normally display are the red, green, and blue channels. The red channel shows up as red ingame, but is actually just grayscale like those others. Same with blue and green.

The regular image is color, but the alpha is not. There is a way to display or not display the alpha of an image when its used in max. In the materials editor, go the the bitmap for the material, and it'll have settings for the alpha channel. Fool around with these until it works. I can't rememebr exactly what to do.
BTW, anyone know how to make a groundmap for a map?
