i had to go out and buy a book for school. while in the book store i came across this:

http://www.amazon.com/Autodesk-3ds-Max-8-Revealed/dp/0619273437
this is a book focused on 3ds max 8. for the person who is just starting max for the first time, to to seasoned modeler.
im about 70 pages into it any i have already learned things. this is good especially for those of you who have self taught yourself everything, as it will tell yo about all those little buttons that you never knew about. also, it tells you why 3ds max has a teapot function.
it is a very lengthy book, but it provides picture diagrams for every step of the process and is pretty interchangeable with max 6 and 7.
also, you look pretty smart reading it at lunch time while your friends are looking at thier fashion magazines
dont do that though. you should be at your computer experimenting with everything and following each step in max. you will learn.

yeah i think its definitly worth it. even if you are already comfortable with max, chances are you are self taught for the most part, which means your knowledge is kinda like a 3 year old attempting to play tetris. holes everywhere. this book fills them all in nicely.

hey i was pretty good at tetris...
/internet sarcasim still fails huh?
lol but there is a difference between self teaching and learning by the book

mainly because the book goes by everything and there might be things you didnt know about be self-learning like i didn't even know about saphien till i watch a tutorial

Wasn't the teapot like the first 3d model to be scanned into a computer and it's slightly streteched for some reason I forget but they have it's model in all 3d programs to compare them?

I should try getting a max book...

From what I can remember from 3D University lectures, the teapot was used as a standard object to model as it had a suitable difficulty to test 3D software.

I think. Might have to dig up my 3ds max bibles FTW

It was created because it is Advanced. It has just about anything difficult you could try to make in 3D modeling. Simply the shape and geomentry of one.
