I was looking around for something to do, when I remembered something I wanted to look up on Wikipedia. So I found what I needed and, eventually, ended up looking at a bunch of Halo topics (this usually happens when I go to Wikipedia). Anyway, I found a topic about the book based on the halo game, The Flood. There was a list of other halo books in the references. I was bored, so I clicked a few. Eventually, I found this:

The part where a pelican cant fly in space is something i still wonder about, though that IS what happened.

A pelican can fly in space. They do it it in Halo 2 and 3. There is an airlock door that closes over the main hatch. There is also a secondary airlock for entering or departing from the pelican.

The legendary ending to Halo 1 probably is not part of the story, and is just there for laughs. He is up in space before Halo is entirely eliminated.

EDIT: Also, if you read first strike you learn that when she says "only dust and echoes" she has only run a passive scan. When she runs an active scan they see a rock with a protruding section like a pelican's nose. This is also when they save Linda or whoever the other spartan was. I think Linda - 058.

onyx was made up of sentinals? lol, but yea,it was destroyed and some spartans are left inside the portal. With the doctor. Hmm..

I think it was, the other Spartans, Dr Hasley and I think CPO Mendez, are on the inside of a giant sphere construct though. Maybe Master Cheif is actually inside the slipspace bubble containing the sphere construct but outside the sphere.

Onyx wasn't made up of sentinels, it was a forerunner planet, artificial like the halo rings. But it did have a sentinel factory that produced a new sentinel every six seconds....maybe that's what you were thinking of.
