This is an extremely easy fix, so your in luck!
Go into the Customize pull down; Preferences In the Viewports Tab go to Configure Driver, select Revert from Direct 3D Choose Open GL
There you go!

Ok, I'm sorry I have to start asking the stupid questions, but did you select each of the viewports and zoom in them? I sometimes, I have an issue like this where the windows will be greyed out until I move within them or load a project. If you haven't tried this, do it! If this doesn't work I really don't know how to help you, because I've never had the problem before. If no one on Halomaps can help try the forum over at CGSociety.org, there are tons of professional digital artists on there that may be able to help.

Once again I'm sorry for having to ask you a dumb question but sometimes people just give up if something doesn't work. I'm sorry I couldn't help ya fix the problem and good luck with figuring it out, make sure you let me know what was up if you find out though!

Ok, the reason it turns black is because of the way 3DS Max 9 is set up. One of my instructors told me there is a way to fix this, but after a while of working with it, it doesn't bother me so I never fixed it.
As for hiding the polys, just to make sure, you are hiding them using the option in the Edit Geometery section right? < This is another problem I've never encountered so, I gotta ask the dumb questions!! hahaha

Its called Backface Cull. Select the object and change the setting. That fixes your problem, easy as that. BTW You can change the rendering in the Autodesk tab in the start menu. Edited by johnnyblaz20 on Apr 17, 2008 at 02:14 AM
