What do you mean the game was not meant for it? The blue channel of the Multipurpose map IS a specular map.


Than how come making the multipurpose completely blue and turning all reflection properties off shows nothing at all? From my personal experience, the blue channel of the multi only controls intensity of the cubemap. If you change the cubemap, you'll see the reflections change. I don't notice any specular at all. Just reflections.

Specular does seem to work in a way (at least in shader_environment)

the visor looks great but the armor is a tad too shiny for my tastes i prefer the halo 3 dull look


it just feels more like metal to me and less like glass

though i wouldn't mind getting my hands on that visor to see what you did

You have totaly right about the shiness of the spartan. It's just, I think it's look cool like that. For the visor, if you want I can send you the .shader and all the .bitmaps you will need :)

Really nothing special here. i want to do some H2 elite mp maps (OMG JOHNLEXTASTIC)
(will probably just get bsps using entity)
works perfectly, exept only stock H1 weapons are being held properly in 3P.

Well, I removed the cubemap from the H4 spartan, but it looked so craptacular that I just... barfed.

Try some texture magic. Or a more bland cubemap (something roughly similar to reflection diffuse metal)

After comparing them side to side in Max, I have found that:
the chest is the only part that has really changed (apparently it was stretched out to make it look more feminine)

And the body shape is changed a little too.

EDIT: I have changed it a lot now the body shape looks more than skiny chief.

I was just kinda curious - I know probably no one does this since the standard fare here is rips and power armor, but how do you go about making a human model from scratch? It seems hard as balls to accomplish it using plane modeling, even with refs.

I could just use one of the many free ones floating around and kinda build my own off of that, but it seems like cheating..

There are many tutorials out there. You need to be able to understand anatomy which can be done with patience and practice. I don't have a link to a tutorial, but here is what I do.

1. I normally get pictures and references of what I want to model, and place them accordingly in my viewports.

2. Sometimes if I have difficulty, i'll take a base mesh of a head from mudbox to make sure I have a balanced and an even flow. When I modeled the new Elite anatomy I kinda just had to go from references from the games.

3. I usually model half of the head\body very sub-par then mirror it over, and also prepare the model for subdivision.

4. I then take it into mudbox and make the details, finish up, then bake\etc. Keep in mind things like armor or plating on a character should be seperate from the body mesh.


The blind wolf was actually my first ever shot at anatomy, it came out pretty good for what little references I had of it.

Keep in mind, any kind of modeling\design is a big step from porting, I'm not sure what your experience is but it is good to get the hang of modeling other simpler objects before anatomy and skeletal structures. If you have trouble modeling something simpler then that, you sure as hell will be having a hard time modeling a character.

Elite sculpt WIP Day 1

Known things that I will fix:
Eye positioning not allowing proper sight, mouth stuff, gums not swelling enough, and mandible bones need to extend more into the head (there are a few more I can't remember atm).

Plans:
Make the rest of the body
Make the mouth part look better
Optimize a bit
Texture
Make armor maybe?
Make a low poly and release maybe?

This elite isn't an exact replica of other elites and is my own style. This is also my first time sculpting ever. If enough people complain they can't use P3D I will take screenshots on the next iteration.

that's some nice MGE XE you got there, but i was referring to the shape, the wideness of the character. (also unless your using some BB that makes the shoulders thinner i'm pretty sure that's a not a guy^, i was referring to the male character models, could be the angle though)

Took a look at a few morrowind chars (good idea btw, great 3d reference) and revised vertexes a bit before pumping through Optimizer.



Last one is with turbosmooth...I am hypnotized by just how FINE this guy's behind is with it on. Dayum.

i meant the way morrowind characters looked very VERY wide and disproportionate. to elaborate the shoulders are too wide (maybe move them up a bit vertically too) and the legs seem too spread for a starting pose
