A relatively small map, not too small but not like Coldsnap because huge maps provide absolutely no gameplay, but in a small map you always have to watch your back which makes it alot more fun. I'd say most all weapons to be close range, no fuel rod guns, maybe 1 rocket launcher and maybe 2 sniper rifles, custom weapons that don't n00b out everyone, like for example the pistol on mystic or the battle rifle on many h2 maps. Also minimal vehicles because you don't want everyone to be driving around, it also ruins the gameplay. And make sure you have enough scenery.

A medium sized map (between the size of bloodgulch and battlecreek), with the good regular halo 1 weapons (mabye a battle rifle here and there), and very minimal vehicle usage.

k i look for balance in weapons, no SUPEROMFGZORZ weapons i hate those. and a lot of difference in land. high spots, low tunnels, fog, things like that. it really makes a gameplay difference, and if you can make it look good, itll be a sure thing. people will DL it. also the maps size is important, it has to be big but not too big. if its not a big map it should be a small one. in other words, i like a big map like coldsnap but only if the weapons and vehicles are according.

big map= coldsnap size (maybe a lil smaller to give a chance to actually FIGHT)
vehicles= powerful, no nukes cus they suck but give it some big fast vehicles like LS's or jets to make some interesting battles.
weapons= also powerful, long range, heavy punch, good scope.

small map= anywhere from hangemhigh (FAV MAP) - chronopolis
vehicles= NONE or small ones. best to have NO vehicles
weapons= basic ones or custom ones that have no PWNAGENOOBAGEFROOBAGE abiltiy. just like a weapon that needs skills

so yeah, this is what i think. if your taking time to know what the gamers think is good, you must want to put some actual effort into it, so i put some effort into my description

Ok, here's a good map idea I'm workin on:
A large map of a city (Like Chronopolis), with the outskirts desolate wasteland and destruction (Think Halo 3 commercial), and the interior being largely intact. Both teams have giant vehicles of doom (Mythos for Reds, Scarab for Blues), along with an assortment of vehicles (Tanks, Hogs, that junk).
The city streets are big enough to let a Tank through, but not a Mythos or Scarab thanks to the many Skyscrapers in the City.
The flags are in the same skyscraper, right next to each other, but with unbreakable glass seperating them, and the only way to the flag building is to follow walkways that are placed between buildings (For anyone who knows their Star Wars, it looks like Coruscant) until you arrive at the closest building to the enemy base. Then you have to go all the way across town (In a hog if you are lucky enough to steal one from the enemy base), having to take the longest route possible because of all the destruction, and then having to use the route where the Scarab and Mythos meet for a little while. You then turn at one of the intersections and take another long route back to your base and into another Skyscraper, climbing floors until you are at the transition walkway between buildings, and then walking to the flag.
The race flags take you on the longest and deadliest route possible through the buildings.
In the very center of the map is a gigantic skyscraper made for snipers that can hit anyone almost anywhere in the map.

And there should never be any superweapons, PERIOD.

The trick is that they can't hurt people in the city since they are too big. They can only hurt three people:
a. The people capturing the flag
b. The people racing
c. The people who are complete morons and run out in front of one.

Yeah what he said, I think you need to weaken the normal halo pistol and add custom weapons. Add vehicles that require more than one peron to operate like a tank that requires one to gun and one to drive and make the missels enough to kill an infantry easy but almost kill another vehicle.

Why thank you enjoistaticx. And I also want to say that by 'small' I mean about the size of battle creek or something.

Personally, I find it better to have two or three sniper towers, Yoyorast-style, so that way if someone is being a sniper noob in one of the towers, all the others have to do is turn and snipe him.
Speaking of Sniper Towers, I remember one time on Diesel when there was a camper scoring kill after kill in the towers, and I had to get everyone in my team together to storm the sniper tower and take him out. We started with 8 people, and by the time we got up there, we were down to about 4. But that's off-topic.

Another good thing to have in a map are secrets. They are fun to find and get in to, and once you're in, you can relax and have fun.

well i like big maps i can kill like crazy in them and i love vehicles even if they are used by the noobs i just assume dont make nukes so powerful and every vehicle has to have a weakness like the longswords windsheild but mythos hardly any except the front though my gfx card is cheap so i can see the driver but i love pelicans and dropships and i like everything to be different bipeds though not many maps like i want have a custom biped :{ but i like when the weapons are different and i occasionally like to get away from the griefing and play ai maps like stoys in a single player map

If you do put custom vehicles in a map make sure infantry can kill it.

i would look for real good textures, and big bases. lots and lots of weapons for more ways to kill ppl, vehicles, some ground such as warthog and spectre, and some airial such as the pelican, longsword and draco. I like maps with lots of different buildings and structures to explore, and i love when the levels with water have places and obstacles under the water, like islandhop. I like maps that are good for hangin out and just talking to people, AND killing. Bases with several floors are the best in my opinion because you get more room for weapons AND because when someone is comin up a staircase or ladder, ya can jump down on them and SNEAK ATTACK. Well, thats my opinion in a good map.

ya know what else i like that i forgot to post? i like when the map makes SENSE. In other words, when there's a cool story that goes with the map, and when your playing the map you can actually picture the story happening. when ya have just an untextured valley with warthogs ghosts and weapons, its just not fun.
