So I'm planning to upgrade to windows 10, but before I do that I've got a few questions:

-Some people had problems playing this game on windows 10, are all problems solvable as of yet?
-Are there things I need to take in mind when I upgrade to windows 10?
-Should I make a back-up of all my files when I upgrade to windows 10?

Your best option is to setup a virtual machine.

1 for whatever OS you have running and the other for winten.

That won't give me full speed win10 and it isn't the easiest thing to get DX12 to work with a virtual machine

-Halo has always been running well since I have upgraded to Windows 10. It is even slightly faster. Same goes for Open Sauce, the only thing you need is the latest version of .NET Framework, but that goes for the other Windows versions as well
-Use a local account unless you already have a MS account. Enable Fast Startup, disable apps in background, and disable Cortana
-You should every time you upgrade to whatever Windows version you want, although the upgrade kept my files both when I switched from W7 to W10 and when I have upgraded to the 1511 version

I never had any issues with running Halo and OS when I was still on Windows 10.
The only thing that comes to mind is the HEK. I think I remember some threads about compatibility issues? I never installed it so I don't know.

well no win 10, uses the lest amount of ram I think it was 2 gb's,
VS win 7 4gb's, so that's was it seems a bit faster , however this doesn't work for all games tho.

and a side node you can use a app, for win 7 to get a better start up time.
that or more ram would do.


and to the op yes back-up of all your files, just incase something happens.

-Are there things I need to take in mind when I upgrade to windows 10?-. the way you get updates , could drain all your intranet ced, and for the more part win 10's updates, have been known to give you some odd errors they don't even say what there fixing.

last but lest buy the pro if your gunna get win 10

Windows 10 works fine. I sign into my MS account and it syncs up a lot of my basic things between my desktop and laptop. Game runs ok, no issues. Disable the P2P windows update though.

Not really, I have the game working just fine on windows 10, without anything else. Updating to the latest version will help if it doesn't start. If your on windows 7, don't upgrade, but if your using windows 8, then upgrade, since windows 8 sucks.

Windows Update has a P2P sharing system to distribute updates. Make sure this is disabled. http://www.alexandreviot.net/2015/07/29/windows-10-disable-windows-update-p2p/

UAC is also something you should disable.

I'm on the standard edition of 10 and have no issues.

The UAC is an integral part of windows security and should not be disabled. Without it malicious software can easily run and affect system files.

Nah. Disable UAC or get annoying with windows security popups every 10 seconds.

If you are using Open Sauce for Halo it won't work on Windows 8.1/10 without enabling some of the older .net frameworks.

Kornmann has publicly stated his intent to never update Open Sauce to be compatible with Windows 10, and how he will never run any version beyond Windows 7 to update Open Sauce. I'm not sure what the plan is in 2020 when Windows 7 is unsupported, but I certainly won't be running Open Sauce then.


Pfft. I've already downgraded to Windows 2000 to get rid of those damn pop-ups. Best Windows OS ever! :P

I have literally no idea what you're talking about. I just re-installed Windows 10 a couple weeks back and installed Halo, HEK, and OS without a single issue. Didn't do anything special. I just hit the install button and everything works.

The issue I talk about has to do with fresh installs of W10. People hitting the upgrade button won't see the issue as all the software is already installed. The Open Sauce installer crashes when trying to install DirectX. This has been a problem on Windows 8.1/10 for many years with OS. There is a way around it by enabling an old .net framework (I think 3.5?), but its been too long since I attempted the workaround and I don't recall.

Yes just confirmed it, you need to install .net framework version 3.5 as it is not installed on new installations of Windows 8.1/10. Once that framework is installed the OS installer will work.

Personally I think it's insanity to rely on a 9-year old version of the .net framework, we are currently at version 4.6 and I see no reason why the installer should depend on such an old framework.

I honestly don't remember any issues with this. I've done a 100% fresh install of 10 when I first got it and I do completely clean installs every couple of months for various reasons. Don't recall any issues. Maybe a common program I use installs the old net for me? Dunno. Point being- you can get OS 100% working on W10.

It is true, you can get OS 100% working on W10.

My gripe is that it doesn't work out of the box, at least for me and others I've talked to. A lot of people will just upgrade and never see this problem, but for those who do clean installs usually run into it. I feel it's a poor attitude for the developers to take: "We'll die before we officially support Windows 10, you're on your own".

That may be a slight exaggeration, but such a similar attitude doesn't make me warm up to OS any faster.

If you didn't disable the UAC maybe you wouldn't have to :)

Last time I re-installed Windows was because a video card crash error somehow bugged 3ds max and re-installing Max didn't help. UAC wouldn't have prevented this.

Yes, I run windows 10, and I can get Open Sauce up and running, not even needing to change compatibility settings.

I don't have to worry about that then I use windows 8.1 and OS works fine for me :)

You can use an external hard-drive, use a file sharing service like dropbox,create a network drive, or mcopy your data to another computer.
