Hello, every time I try to open "tool.exe" it crashes immediately. Is there something that I'm supposed to do before running it? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Head to this address within your local hard drive C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 Organise the file order by type and search for an application called "cmd" Once you have located cmd go ahead and COPY it over to your halo root directory From then on whenever you wish to run tool you will need to first run the cmd application before typing in tool within the command line.

You're not supposed to run tool.exe You copy cmd over into the Halo Custom Edition directory and run the cmd program.

From then on whenever you wish to run tool you will need to first run the cmd application before typing in tool within the command line. Or you could do the hold Ctrl+Shift right click on the "Halo Custom Edition" folder to get the option to open up the command prompt that way. It's just Shift + Right Click. Alternatively if you just want to use the keyboard, you could just do Alt+D to quickly access the location bar and then type cmd + Enter. Edited by raffgie on Jan 24, 2016 at 10:44 PM

I have pasted it in the directory and typed in tool in the cmd, however when I proceed to type in the command it says "Couldn't read map file './toolbeta.map'".

Relevant http://www.modacity.net/forums/content.php?201-Update-The-Search-for-toolbeta.map Quote: It's a development map for the development of Tool in the HEK and it is no longer needed because Tool is "finished" and self-contained. If it still exists, it's on some secret backup archive on some hidden Microsoft Game Studios backup server and probably also somewhere on some Gearbox server. E: You don't need it. cd C:\Program files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition
and then after that I type in "tool".

I've copied it in but I was wondering if I am supposed to give the cmd a specific command to get tool to work.

All you need is the cmd file in the root directory, like Mookz stated. When you open that specific cmd, it will start already directed to Halo's root directory (mine's "D:/Halo Custom Edition"). Just run your "tool <command>", and you're good to go.

Yes.
Tool is a command line program. That's why it closes when you try to run it directly. It needs to be "run" and given commands through a command prompt. The reason we copy the base command prompt (cmd.exe file) from the Windows folder into the HCE directory is for convenience, as cmd's starting directory is wherever the file is located. This allows us to bypass any need to run cd <path to Custom Edition> or the like. Edited by A Juicy Frank on Jan 25, 2016 at 07:12 PM

I managed to get it to work, but when I try to type in the following command to compile a jms file:
"tool structure levels\beginner beginner"
I get this:
"### ERROR model file has wrong version number" Edited by chimichangas4life on Jan 26, 2016 at 12:54 PM
