Hi folks, Here's the idea: while working on our projects, we stream on Twitch in the Master Chief Collection section. Name your stream something like "making CE maps." Post in this thread a bit ahead of time to let people know, and we jump in chat and give the person feedback - not necessarily on the project, but also on how they use the tools (3ds max, etc). The reason I think people should do this is because I've been using 3ds max for a couple years now, and I feel like there are a lot of things I am not doing very efficiently. On the other hand, there are some aspects that I feel quite comfortable with. Since it's very hard to articulate the abstract nature of 3d modeling in a forum post, I really believe that this method could be helpful to a lot of new and old content creators. This could also be a way to establish some common workflows throughout the community, which will only lead to more efficiency and ultimately more finished projects (hopefully). What do you think? If anyone's interested in watching me stream this weekend (exact time(s) undetermined, but probably Saturday afternoon around 2pm EST), here's my twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/stunt_man_gmyfGetting set up to stream is super easy and shouldn't take more than 5 minutes for most of you. Here's a link to get you started: http://help.twitch.tv/customer/portal/articles/1262922-open-broadcaster-software

It's a nice Idea but eh streaming call me old fashioned but if you really are that self concious about 3d modelling than upload your self on youtube blocking out a bsp or something.

The idea is centered around discussion rather than tutorials. Youtube videos are a dime a dozen, and if a user has a question about a certain aspect of a video and wishes for the creator to elaborate, they need to either comment on the video or wait for the creator to upload a new one.
Like I said in the OP, 3d modeling concepts are quite abstract and aren't easily articulated/communicated in forum posts and Youtube comments. During an actual discussion during a stream, the viewers can see what the person is doing, making it much easier to communicate feedback.
Also I can't think of any reason why content creators shouldn't be streaming, unless they're trying to keep something secret. You don't even need to stream your face or voice, just 3ds max. Edited by stunt_man on Nov 13, 2015 at 11:10 AM

Good point. With Twitch you can enable "Past Broadcasts," which lets viewers access past streams through the broadcaster's channel.

The concept is targeted more towards those who wish to improve their workflow and technique, but I suppose it could work in your situation as well. I know that you're looking for someone to really walk you through the process step-by-step, so I won't take you up on it, but there are probably some here that would (Flanker?).
One thing you can try is to find someone that wants to teach you, stream to him and have him stream to you. This way, you can try something, and the other can show you what you're doing wrong. I did this with a buddy a few weeks ago, although it wasn't for map making. Works fairly well.
Twitch has a feature (that's off by default) that reduces the delay, but requires a stronger connection. This might be useful.

It's on youtube. Fantastic. Hopefully you'll be able to pick up some tricks from the people streaming here. My main area of focus in 3ds max these days is UV mapping and workflow optimization, and I'll be streaming tomorrow afternoon. You should tune in and compare your methods to my own methods. And hopefully I'll be able to learn something in the same way from more experienced map makers' streams.

Great idea btw, although you would need for people to take crit, which is something that this community has always had an huge issue with.

I'll be streaming for exactly that reason: to receive criticism about both my project(s) and my skills in 3ds max. Insecure people won't stream anyway.

Performance won't be an issue. I'm starting it up in a few minutes btw
EDIT:
Done for today. It was fun - I answered quite a few questions from some competitive H1 guys, discussed the process and some design decisions. Got a few followers.
I'm going to stream again tomorrow around the same time (2pm EST). I'll be blocking out sections of the map, attaching some prefabs, etc. The map I'm working on is still in its early stages, but my goal is to in-game certain sections to make sure the scale is good.
Next weekend I'll be doing UV work and lighting. Edited by stunt_man on Nov 14, 2015 at 04:37 PM

Hey guys,
I haven't been streaming much map creation stuff lately. I've been working on porting stuff that would be painfully boring to watch, but soon I'll try to continue my own projects.
Also I think I'll need to make a post detailing the spawn system in Halo CE...

Yeah you can reup streams of mapmaking if you want. It seems past broadcasts disappear after awhile and I haven't streamed mapmaking since I've been working on porting the Halo 1.5 maps (not much to learn from that process).
I fully plan to resume streaming when I start working on my own maps again.

http://forum.halomaps.org/index.cfm%3Fpage=topic&topicID=49471Here's the archived streams from some time ago. Are people still interested in this sort of thing? I can get back to it if there is enough interest. I'll record future streams and upload them to Youtube. I think the streaming format is good because it allows for a bit of Q&A. Keep in mind I'm not a particularly good modeler but there are certainly some techniques I use that I haven't seen (in regards to Halo map making) so you might learn something I guess. Or, you know, just come watch and tell me how bad I am. It's a win-win situation, maybe I'll learn something.
