But such is life on halomaps. Not really complaining, just pointing out that it's unfortunate that a troll was able to get that filename. Not that first time it's happened, surely won't be the last. To avoid nonsense like this in the future, I advise you all to use codenames for pre-release builds and only reveal the map's actual name upon release.

that leads to its own problems though with not being able to get your map known out there. We all know what Gridiron is... calling it something else would go under most peoples heads. I am sure Dennis can tell when someone is doing something like that to spite someone and will make the necessary changes.

Hmm not so sure, I was always under the impression that if something got uploaded the only way to take it down is with a court order (see: leaked maps). That's not to say I wouldn't be impressed if Dennis did take it down, but I wouldn't count on it.

Indeed unfortunate, considering its a map that will probably be never played at all, even if the author did it as a "joke" or not.
It's happened in the past too - first example that comes to mind is the map's "Requiem", two maps that were in development in the same time and one got released before the other (actually don't think the other map even got released, but author was mad).

I have absolutely no way of determining what people will name their maps, why they name them or if it is malicious or a coincidence. We accept them as they come in and will not be an arbiter of what map name we will accept with the technical exception imposed by the Halo CE game that no two different maps can have the same name. I don't keep a running list of map projects in my head to check against mainly because 99% of announced projects never come to fruition. If was to take down every map that someone objected to then there would be no CMT maps, Lumoria, and most of the popular maps nearly all stock modified maps and most of the tags in the archive would be missing. Also if I was to take down the map named gridiron you object to then I would have to take down the map you want to upload named gridiron if someone else objected.

It troubles you that there is no way to prevent this nonsense? Well then get used to it. Because you are not the gatekeeper nor the guardian of your map names, whether the author is a troll or not. It's just a name dude. Get a new one. But like you said... Quote: --- Original message by: stunt_man But such is life on halomaps.

well you do have a thread and a youtube video going back several months that shows he was/is working on a map gridiron and that the one posted isn't the map he's been working on or known for being gridiron.
I understand you have your policies, but it's not like this is a common thing going on.

I'd rather not. When you're working on a project for a long time you get a name in mind, you start a WIP thread super early so it lasts months/years, people start following the development and word spreads. Then when you're almost ready to release the final version, you have to blemish the filename with something like _final.map because someone already released an troll map with the same name. I don't have any suggestions or anything, nor am I necessarily taking a stance. Just starting a discussion. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Quote: --- Original message by: stunt_man someone already released an troll map with the same name. While you can assume that it is a troll map, and it may be, you can't know for certain that is it. Nor can I. I did not recognize the map project name so maybe he didn't either. If it is a troll map to use up the name then it is incredibly childish, petty and totally immature. It's a worthless stunt that only has as much power over you as you give it. Quote: --- Original message by: stunt_man Has this ever happened to anyone else? I don't have that many fingers and toes.

So why not tell the author to PM stunt_man and come to some sort of agreement or you will remove it on suspicion of being a troll move? By ignoring it you just set a precedent of more people doing this to piss off other people. Surely if this person is mature enough to have mad a mistake they will understand stunt_man's position, and if they are that immature to not have that discussion it is more than likely this was done as a troll move.
This is the first I have seen this happen in years and don't understand why it is that big a hassle to get involved for someone who clearly has worked on a very nice map, which frankly is one of the nicest ones in years.

It's not my map, it's Pope's. Just starting a discussion. And Dennis I'm not demanding action, I understand. I guess it *could* be a coincidence, and it isn't a troll map. I don't know where Pope pulled the name "Gridiron" from, could have been a TV show or something.
It's just unfortunate that the possibility exists and it could very well be some immature kid stealing the name for the lulz.
(the map is using the tutorial's ground map over a pretty haphazard terrain model)

On the same vein, I occasionally see maps released under others' names. Edited by MoooseGuy on Sep 7, 2014 at 05:21 PM

I think it's just people hoping the map shows up when visitors google your username so it gets downloaded.

It does suck. But finding another name isn't impossible. I'm not worried about a simple name.

Just steal its publicity by creating a much better project and advertising under the crap-projects' name. Doesn't seem hard at all And considering that we're talking about Halo Custom Edition here: If something gets plagiarized, then the rest of the world will either not know about it(Halo CE is insanely esoteric material) or simply say: Edited by OrangeJuice on Sep 7, 2014 at 09:30 PM
