I'm trying to set up a mac with Windows 7 on a virtual machine to run Halo CE, but it's being a massive pain in the ass because it thinks 3d acceleration isn't enabled when it actually is. Any ideas?

Some virtual machine software have this kind of problems, my personal favorite virtual machine software is "vm ware player" because I never had these kind of problems.
Having that said, I don't know how to fix this problem by anything other than to switch vm software. :/

Use parallels. I use a late 2013 macbook pro with retina display and I do 90% of my CE playing in my Virtual Machine. I also have a bootcamp partition where the VM is installed, so when I need to record or want to play at 4k resolution I can boot directly into windows.

Did you install the WDDM VBox drivers or just the basic ones? I can't remember the specifics so I could be mistaken but it could be that you need to ensure that you chose the WDDM driver to get Halo to run.
Edit: Probably not but worth a shot. I've had similar trouble in the past but I'm not entirely sure how I resolved it. Edited by Btcc22 on Aug 15, 2014 at 11:29 AM

I just installed windows in the bootcamp partition and loaded the partition with parallels, didn't have to do any sort of configuring. There's a free trial for parallels on their website, I am not familiar with VirtualBox.

Surprisingly there is a good portion of CMT members who prefer not to use windows. 3 of us primarily use macs, 2 of us Linux, one of us is still on vista and XP, and then everyone else I think is on W7. No one uses w8, but I'm going to try a surface pro 2 to bring to PAX with me for demos along with my Macbook.

Thanks, I found that after I saw your comment and decided to search Google for a Mac version. Unfortunately it gets stuck on "Wineskin is busy..." before installing, or something along those lines. It was stuck like that for about an hour so I just cancelled it. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong?

Posting from my windows installation via bootcamp.
This is seriously the easiest and best way to do it.

WUT, since when does it cost money? https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/6_0 Then again, I don't see a mac download.

Also using a VM basically lets me merge the 2 OS's, which makes thing so much easier to organize and manage files.

When it comes to gaming on a VM, games with low system requirements work best. I use VirtualBox + Windows XP to play a game called Steel Beast (a tank simulator), because it doesn't work all that well on anything past XP (there is a newer version of Steel Beast available, but, it cost over $100 and requires a usb dongle for copy protection).

Did you install guest additions in safe mode? If you didn't, you don't have directx support.
To get into safe mode, you must start pressing F8 once virtual machine starts (right after virtual box logo).

To get into safe mode, you must start pressing F8 once virtual machine starts (right after virtual box logo). Tried getting into safe mode multiple times, it didn't work. I even spammed F8 through the entire boot process.
