So I'm thinking about taking a shot at making a custom installer for Custom Edition... one that would put the installer for CE 1.10, the Universal UI, HAC2, OpenSauce and some popular custom maps, all in one package.

This way, I thought new people who aren't too good at customizing their computers and/or are new to Halo would have an easier time being up to date on what our community has to offer...

I'm still looking through tutorials, but I think this is technically doable... the only problem is, would I be "allowed" to do this?

Its probably fine, assuming it'll be the default Halo CE installer, followed up by additional installers to install the rest of the files.

I hate the part of CD-key

for those who do not live in countries where even games like this aren't sold or do not have enough money to buy it online

Define "legal".

le·gal [lee-guhl]
adjective
1. permitted by law; lawful: Such acts are not legal.
2. of or pertaining to law; connected with the law or its administration: the legal profession.
3. appointed, established, or authorized by law; deriving authority from law.
4. recognized by law rather than by equity.
5. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of the profession of law or of lawyers: a legal mind.

edit: also at this point microsoft really doesn't give any @#$%s about this game so it's not like you'll have men in suits showing up at your door.

It'd mean he could't distribute it via Halomaps. (If he could anyway).

Also, because of how 1.9 removed the requirement for the CD-Key check, I'd imagine that creating an installer with 1.0.1 pre-installed might cause some issues, as you wouldn't need a CD Key and anyone with any idea of what to do could just extract the files from the installer without the CD-Key screen (I think).

Maybe if you encrypted it somehow until a valid CD-Key was entered, then that issue would be avoided.

Note: I am not educated in legal matters and this post is based purely on speculation.

Edit: some words and stuff.

If I understood the release notes right, then 1.09 doesn't do a CD drive check (i.e. -you can play without having your copy of Halo inside your CD drive). You still need a valid key to install and/or use all the features.
Though, still, that encryption would be pretty helpful...

What I was thinking was to have the installer unpackage everything like this (and hopefully somehow forego the separate installer for the main game and/or the whole CD key check thing):

This project sounds awesome! If this game critically needs something right now, its to increase accessibility.
I know a lot of my friends are hesitant just because they don't want to mess with "computer-stuff" too much, and something like this would be incredibly helpful in lowering the barrier to entry.
Best of luck ;D

Pardon my ignorance but do people really have a lot of problems understanding dragging and dropping while reading the instructions. It takes like 3 minutes at max to do everything and it is pretty self-explanatory. Honestly it sounds more like they are lazy rather than not bright enough.

Thanks :) I hope I'll have something to show, soon...

It's all good~ and, hate to break it to ya, but you'd be surprised by how many of my friends irl are legitimately, seriously confused every time they need to install or manipulate programs...

Besides, Halo CE isn't really the best example in the whole world when it comes to documentation (here is how you do it right), so I don't think it'd hurt to make things easier for people :P

I mean, what's wrong with helping lazy people be even lazier?

EDIT: I think the very fact that you need to buy a CD key for one game to install another (followed by a long list of other "optional" downloads!) is already a turn-off for a lot of potential players, too. Sounds like a reversible problem, no?

This, this, this, this, all of this.

"Run as administrator? I don't know man, what if it takes over my computer?"
Legit quote by a friend of mine when I was helping him install some games.
