Only when you know when and where to use it. Indiscriminate use in a web forum shows a lack of maturity and self control, something we try to save you from.

I disagree, I think that a free and open medium without limits on what you can say provides for a more thorough discussion. Limiting users on what they can say, in my experience, has only resulted in complaints while the alternative is letting people say what they like, and letting the rest of the users shun them as needed. Perhaps if you do not want to allow profanity in the public forum, perhaps a private message is sent without limits. Anything offensive can surely be reported.

That said, it's your forum and I'm happy with the free service I get.

"free speech" still has limits imposed upon it. For example you are not allowed to yell "fire" in a public place unless there is a fire.

While I agree that openness and latitude are required to foster meaningful public discourse it is still expected that there be bounds placed upon the content of said discussions. The fact that this is an On-topic forum is a clear indication and example of the limits placed upon the members speech within the forum.

In most, if not all, societies the use of profanity in public is frowned upon, limiting the available speech allowed. Broadcast TV is an example of societal norms where profanity is limited to varying degrees.

In this forum is is prohibited as the price of admission. Not because I don't curse but because I have not heard a single compelling argument how the use of profanity in a public topic specific video game forum enhances the general discourse.

The URL you're posting in the image seems to form a pattern of letters and numbers that could be interpreted as profanity. Between "#!dB" and "TK!" You might be able to fix this by running the URL through a website like tinyurl.

Of course in the discussions of freedom of speech it is the government that is restricted by the first amendment in what restrictions can be placed on speech and that does not supersede the rights of publishers to set limits within their publications.

I dunno man, I dared my buddy to yell fire when we were walking down the street after reading that article and he didn't get arrested. I'd say that counts as being allowed to yell about flames in a public place.

Of course, he looked like an arse in doing so, and so did I by extension, because social conventions dictate it's not okay to yell about danger when there isn't actually one. And that's why I think the other guy made an interesting point in saying similar limitations would apply on an online environment regarding profanity; although not necessarily completely true seeing as swearing here isn't frowned upon nearly as much as it would be elsewhere.

You can't get trapped in a street that is burning down around you, so it's hard to draw a parallel between shouting "Fire!" when walking down the street and shouting "Fire!" in a crowded, enclosed room with two exits.

You can drive over the speed limit and not get arrested, that doesn't mean you're allowed to speed.
