I remember when I used to only be able to play in safe mode on my old computaterinator. Wasn't quite as bad as your screen caps, but everything was gray, which was a real female dog in heat for multiplayer (All spartans were gray) and transparent plasma/chicago shaders wouldn't appear. Oh and most particles wouldn't appear either. Or decals...
