its definitely best to have a keyboard one way or another. it makes all the difference communicating with your team in games like tribes ascend. i've never used a gamepad for really competitive gaming but i'm contemplating a nice razer pad, opinions from anyone more qualified?

It's statements like this that get threads closed (indirectly, due to flamewars) I disagree, I use both gamepad (wireless xbox 360 controller) and keyboard + mouse. I prefer using the controller for games that support it by retaining (console ports, ugh) the reticle magnetism\aim assist. If they don't have it, then I usually stick with the keyboard and mouse combo. -For Halo CE, I use the gamepad. -For BF3, I use both, depending on how I feel I want to play. (though it is easier to get more accurate shots with the mouse, but yeah). For the call of duty games I have installed, I use the keyboard and mouse since they have no aim assist whatsoever. MW2 has no gamepad support at all (xpadder though, but no Aim Assist) MW3 has no gamepad support Black ops has native gamepad support, but no aim assist, which makes the inaccuracy of a gamepad that much worse. World at War does detect my controller and allows me to map buttons, but doesn't detect the joystick movements. IN SUMMARY: I use both, sometimes one more than the other depending on the game and the quality of its support for gamepads.

lol
I was thinking exclusively for Halo CE.
and the keyboard would be used to communicate, but when i compare it to the Gamepad, i'm comparing it as far as movement is concerned (WASD) etc...
but i don't know...maybe CE is old news
what am i missing out on ?

I prefer using mouse and keyboard when I can.
I don't have much of a problem using controller though.

funny story. i made some youtube videos of halo while using a gamepad, and sum1 actually was like "you suck" and then disliked all my vids. there are perks to gamepad, and perks to keyboard and mouse, and perks to mousepad(being too damn lazy to connect anything hahaha :P)
you can choose what you prefer most comfortable for you, lol you can even combine controller and mouse, i did it once Edited by rcghalohell on Sep 5, 2013 at 01:26 PM

I totally believe the gamepad lying on my desk is there if I need time to piss myself off. I'll go play an FPS with no aim-assist at all or play Civilization 5 with it. Heck, same thing with a M&K. I'll play FIFA with them if it costs me some nerve-racking moments, but hey, it sure is rewarding once you actually get the hang of it; in both cases.

oh... i figured the guy meant for movement, like say a razer 20 button with an 8 direction joystick, and still use the mouse for aiming. if he meant gamepad for aiming i'd say "oh lawd no!". i have a sweet gaming mouse with a 1ms polling rate, its gonna cost a lot for that kinda accuracy and precision in a gamepad.

Splitscreen with two Xbox controllers and two Guitar Hero controllers. All I can say is pure comic genius in the first two minutes... and utter annoyance to play properly for the next 2-5 minutes before someone starts to throw the guitar at the television. Haven't tired using the drumset though...

I've been playing CE with a GamePad that has a short, it keeps cutting off. Frustrating
I read the Xbox usb controller mentioned a few times, how good is that ?

It's fun using the game-pad on Single Player. Especially with "player_magnetism 1" on. When playing Multiplayer it's weird because the slight movement of the analog stick will make you run at full speed because you can't walk. But you can walk in Single Player. Is there a real reason why Gearbox made it like that?

Is there a real reason why Gearbox made it like that? In campaign, you can't see yourself in third person (usually), so you can't see that the animations don't support walking. It looks like you're running in place, but moving slowly. Dunno about coop in the xbox.

I only use keyboard+mouse, however, sometimes few games just play so horribly using them. Emulating TLOZ:The Wind Waker was such a pain when you can only move in 8 directions with a keyboard. What was worse though was Battlefield 3 jets and helis, it was so hard to master them at first so I ended up having to join empty servers just to set up all my key bindings, a few target practises and all that, but luckily I found something that works thanks to extra mouse buttons.
Im too lazy to go out and buy a gamepad so I tried hooking up a wii classic controller to my computer using glovepie (scripting interface for binding controller stuff to keyboards) and ppjoy (joystick emulator), but damned windows 7 home version doesn't allow the use of group policy editors so I couldn't get PPjoy drivers to install since they were unsigned drivers.
