I mean do you have to always apply +sky to compile a map?

Not if the map has no sky as far as I know.

But you do need some sort of light. To light the map.

+sky is just a texture pretty much.

Just imagine it as "the sky" texture. If the map doesn't need it anyway (all indoors) then, no, you don't need it
