disclaimer: you can't make halo a shinier game with this. it is for viewing pleasure and general goofing off. mostly for convenience, though.

this app is designed to let the user see what a cube/environment map looks like on a model. currently, 5 cube/environment map types are supported with respective samples included.
controls:
left click+drag - rotates camera
right click+drag - moves camera up/down
mouse wheel - zooms in and out.

Custom models are currently not supported yet.

clicking "Cubemap" will prompt you to select 1 of 5 formats for cube maps. then you will be asked to open an image file.
supported file types:
.3ds
.png
.jpg
.gif
.tif
.tga

ToDo:
add support for custom models
stop being lazy
add more viewing options
enable tinting/intensity for cubemaps
add more presets to the model previewer
make a prettier UI
make buttons look appealing
add more skies and maybe backgrounds
gun mode for SaG
animated particle viewer tab
better overall look
texture exporting
more settings (FoV, lighting, floor, etc)
BLOOOOOOOM(HDR TOO)
closer look to halo 1's engine
emissive map support(dunno about this one)
model texture transparency support(feathers, spikes, etc)

PICTUREZZZZZZ

extra details:
there are 2 spheres in the upper right corner to show the entire environment map.
I was planning on making a gun appear and shoot the chief, but that wouldn't work for custom models.
the icon keeps resizing itself because it hates me

if you have any issues or suggestions, post in this thread or scream at me via PM.

I would like to be able to view particles.

if i could figure out how halo's particle system works, i might try that.

Looks very suspicious.

words

I bet you're in over your head.

wait
hold the phone
I make a program for my own benefit (viewing cube maps without needing to open 3d editing software), post it here in case anyone else wants to use it for whatever reason

and you think I want to make a tag editor using OS or some nonsense, and that I am wrong in doing this? what

I can't help but quote this.

master noob simply made a program for other people to use to view cubemaps. This is faster than constantly editing values in guerilla, recompiling cubemap bitmaps with tool and an image editor for editing, and reopening sapien countless times to check for cubemap changes on a low resolution game window.

Sure it can be improved, and sure master noob can try to get the rendering to be like halo gbxmodel shaders, but to me your post seems to have a lot more negative attitude than criticism, and I don't see why.

but it just isn't that practical if it isn't rendered the way it would be in Halo.

if you list things that could be improved, I can fix them/add them to the ToDo list.

I do agree though that if this doesn't display the cubemap as how Halo would, then it's a bit pointless in a practical sense. Although I still think this is a neat little app and I'm sure it was fun to make.

Don't be a dumbass grey_knight.

Halo uses cubemaps. This app shows previews of cubemaps. Boom. It is a tool that could make life easier when creating custom cubemaps for Halo.

Use your head, bro.

This is really unnecessary, Cubemap viewer? is that even Halo related. All you did is add a Halo model in it and tada, proclaiming it Halo CE related. Have you even tried to check in sapien if they view the same results?

I agree to DSalimander, my next message is already told by him.

You should really read the whole thread before proclaiming that this tool is "unnecessary."

SIMPLY. If you don't like the tool or don't want to use it, THEN DON'T USE it.

Good job Master Noob, upload this to the archive I'm sure it'll find it's own use. It's pretty convenient to test cubemaps without having to go through Tool, and then in game testing. Even if it's not 100% like Halo, all the features you will add to it will help us save some time when cubemaps are the target.

Please, upload it to the archive :)

Let us input the rgb tint rather than using sliders?

Most of you here are fecking idiots, you don't need to cause an argument in every single thread. He has made an app that helps some people, if you don't like it then kindly feck off.

You children that want to be big and be correct ahaha!

almost done with the model importing; just need to put in some file checks and debugging and should be updated within the week.

empty promises!
anyways, if nobody minds I will be redoing many things, such as:

1) the cubemap selection; instead of 5 buttons, there will be 3 buttons and a display; 2 buttons switch between the choices, and the 3rd button loads the cubemap.

2) the RGB color; as suggested, there will be an input box to the side of each one.

3) the cubemap preview; I plan to have a sphere (like the one in the upper right) show the cubemap before it is applied to the model.

4) the display itself; I will be staring at halo 1 to see what differences are present between the renderer I use and halo's native renderer(besides bumpmaps)

5) the UI; I was thinking of making a sort of halo themed UI instead of the ugly beveled boxes I've been using.

6) the main menu; I have added a main menu, which allows the choice between cubemap or particle previewing. unfortunately, I have next to no knowledge on how halo's particle system works.

7) multiple material support; I planned out how it would work, just needs implementation.

8) BLOOOM

thoughts? suggestions? if you guys want, I can release it as-is (note; there are plenty of bugs with the importing/loading) so you at least have more options.

Cool app.

And while it wasn't stated as politely as I would have stated it, DSalamander is right: it couldn't hurt to make it render more similarly to the Halo engine, for practicality.

Looking forward to updates :) always wanted a more efficient way of testing custom cube maps

Having a guerilla like interface would be awesome.
But what we need at most is an effect renderer... If you have the skills, one day, please think of it :D
