As you all know Mooseguy and I have been collaborating on the Universal UI (which can be found here http://forum.halomaps.org/index.cfm%3Fpage=topic&topicID=42248 if you've been living under a rock) We've come up with an idea, that fits somewhere between Achievements and Skulls, that we are dubbing... wait for it... Challenges. While we're still about 2 weeks off from doing the actual ingame work, we wanted to sort through some ideas with the community as a whole. Challenges would be a UI screen that would start up at the beginning of a map, and give you certain objectives or options. For example, when booting a map such as Delta Halo, you would be presented witha UI where you could pick from the following options, 1. Complete the Level without using the tank. (Tank would not be enterable) 2. Complete the level without using a single vehicle. (No vehicle would be enterable) 3. Destroy 3 Phantoms. (try and destroy 3 Phantoms) 4. Hijack a Wraith and use it to destroy 6 Ghosts (try and do well, that) We could even incorporate some form of skulls into the challenges system, such as a "Regen Skull" that would make enemy health regenerate to full every 30 seconds. At the end of the map, you would be given a completion screen that would pop up, telling you which of the challenges you enabled you successfully completed. For multi map projects, we should even be use the success of a previous map's challenges to enable things in the next map of the series. This would ultimately be an open source system, for all SP map makers to take advantage of. It would be OS dependent, as we need it's UI enhancements to allow this to work. What we need from you all though is ideas. We want to have a repository of the best ideas, that can then be easily enabled by map makers when this project is done, so we can provide everyone with examples and setups that can be easily incorporated into maps. Like I said, we're about 2-3 weeks from beginning to do actual work on this, so right now we just need your help brainstorming ideas. Edited by Masters1337 on Jan 17, 2013 at 03:37 PM

Since you're using OS, have a look at the runtime integers documentation, should speed everything up a bit, and you can use core_save in the mainmenu to save it all.

Never knew what hit them- Get through (some point; to the grav lift?) of A50 without being detected.
Going in Dark- Complete A50 without using neither VISR nor the flashlight.
Sore Feet- Complete B30 without entering a vehicle.
Second Amendment revoked-Complete [insert flood level] without using the shotgun.
Granted, this is based off what I know about the original campaign.

God Amongst Men: Complete the campaign and all challenges on legendary.
The Man In Green: Don't die on any campaign mission on legendary or higher.
Early To The Fight: Get to the security disable point on tsc: evolved before finding the cartographer.
Punching Bag: Get through any campaign mission (or specified part) with only melee attacks and splatters.
Bringing A Grenade To A Gunfight: Any mission, any difficulty, no weapons, no melee, just a grenade.

I had an idea that would be easier then selecting challenges on startup. If it's possible, why not just display possible challenges in the same screen as the loadout screen, and then also have them displayed in the pause menu? As a challenge is unlocked, it would pop up in the HUD (if OS allows this) and then show at the end of the game.
The reason I bring this up is because it would seem unnecessary to have to select a challenge to complete at the start of the game. It would make more sense to have all challenges there for you to work for during the course of the level.
Oh, anyways:

Perhaps a Post-game carnage type thing, where you can look at enemies killed and things like that. Possibly a points system as well? activating and completing challenges gets you huge bonuses and such.

Stealth Murderer - Kill all three Stealth Class sword elite's on AOTCR, without being detected by any of them.
Make Me Your Prophet - Kill all enemies on T&R, no stragglers.
For Johnson - Beat your way through the Swamp Infestation, as Johnson did. (melee flood only).
Pest Control - Kill all flood forms on Keyes so that the marine's have nothing to worry about.

Rise of the Chupathingy: Splatter at least 10 Elites on a Warthog.

none of them required you to avoid all fire period
unless you camp with a sniper rifle and nade everything, you won't go anywhere without taking a few hits
this is especially true in a banshee, whose maneuvering capabilities are rather limited

This would be something that would be built into each map file by it's developer. It's similar to how loadouts were incorporated into FF_Descent. but we call up a UI at the maps start and end.
