Have fun trying to make it by yourself because I'm pretty sure is going to pick up this idea.

Microsoft owns halo ce, but no longer supports it (I'm pretty sure). Therefore, there won't be another update. Also open sauce is a third party program.

Unless they find it in their hearts and release the source code.

I'll try to get it, however, as a non-modder, by ability to provide reasons why we need the source code are limited, anyone want to supply some points?

Example:
You guys are a bunch of (insert bad noun here)s.You have left us with no real support. If you are not going to support us,at least allow us to support ourselves by giving us the source code.

The example should not be taken seriously.

The servers are powered by gamespy.
"microsoft has nothing to lose by giving the public the source code to arguably their most successful product ever"
Think that one over a bit.

What exactly are we asking for here?

the source code for halo Custom Edition

once we have it, we can make the engine more powerful, fix the lighting system, etc.

What makes you think for 1 second that microsoft would make it public?
I will tell you right now that will never happen, even in a month of sundays.

reply from DeeJ of Bungie.net:

Sorry, man. I wish I could help, but Microsoft owns that code. It's not a thing for me to release, even if I could find it around here. All of our people are charging toward our next game, so they wouldn't be able to dig this deep into the past.

Have you tried to get in touch with bs angel at 343?

Now, we have to consider the ramifications of Microsoft officially ceasing support of H:CE. For one, as mentioned above, we'll probably see the departure of the Gamespy multiplayer system as presumably they're getting something from MS annually for hosting an ancient game. In this, until someone can step forward and offer something similar to http://xwis.net, community growth will surely grind to a halt and experience a drastic decline as the only feature of CE is rendered null and void.

This seems like a major flaw to me.

I suspect that there is still a decent portion of ordinary, non-techie players in Halo Custom Edition -- not many, but enough for their departure to leave an impact. This certainly seemed like the case last time I fired up my CE copy. These people are unlikely to have the know-how needed to attach to a new multiplayer service or to install an add-on that significantly alters the game's source.

Given the game's age, if such people suddenly saw their online multiplayer stop working for a long enough period of time, they'd be likely to depart... well, forever. The techies in the community would have one shot at setting up a transition for these players; if they mismanage that, then a huge chunk of the population is gone. Of course, even if the transition is managed well, there are still likely to be a good chunk of players that never hear about all of this, and so there'll still be a hit to the game's population.

Now, this is all speculative, but it seems like it'd be a big concern -- a deficit that far outweighs the associated benefit. :\

Halo PC wasn't even that great of a port it's-self at the time, of course we think it is now because of the failed Halo 2. It was stripped down from the xbox variant, so it could run properly on average PC's 10 years ago. Now this resulted in a loss of some visual appeal (shaders, for example). When Halo 2 was released for PC, all textures had there resolution multiplied by twice the size. Anything different between xbox and PC was better on the PC. I had no problem with the Halo 2 game it's self, other then that excuse of an editing kit(and high system requirements). Although the porters themselves released a video with full editing kit demonstrations, Microsoft didn't like the idea of this (for who knows why), had the Kit stripped, and subsequently destroyed there own game. Otherwise, we'd all be on Halo 2 right now, and OS probably wouldn't exist. If it was totally up to the porters of Halo 2, we'd be set up big time. Hell, half of them joined up on h2vista.net for a while to support the game. They were a good team, and they actually helped me a lot personally when I was trying to make a good looking map.

i doubt this is possible so please take it as half joke half serious if it possible it was my genuine solution of it is not it was a joke but still imagine if it were possible

maybe it runs through halo maps servers and before you join a watch you watch a 10 second add of which funds it and dennis becomes grandmaster of halo CE and get a custom player model with a ban hammer that he can use to ban hackers with

There's a big difference between server architecture designed for running style sheets and basic html with the occasional file transfer and boxes built with gameserver hosting in mind.

i know i know but i want to see this

Bungie tried to get the source code released, but MS said no, most probably because HCE Anniversary runs on the Halo PC/CE ported code.

CEA might be named a different engine, but all of those physics, the way body's fall, etc, were not rewritten. The whole game is based around Halo 1's code and overlayed with a new graphics engine. You'd know this if you watched some vidocs on the game. For them to re-write code like that would be an out right waste.

And you're right. Halo 2 was upgrades of Halo 1, as Halo 3 was upgrades of Halo 2. Reach however was completely rewritten(someone says that in one of the vidocs as well).

Killwerftw is right. CEA single player is halo 1 with a saber engine on top. You can say it's two engines combined together. It's not "based on" saber's engine, it's "using" saber's engine along with the halo 1 BLAM engine.
