the base is a separate model?
in 3ds max/gmax just move the base to where you want it in your map delete polygons from the map this should leave a gap between the base and the map terrain just make new polygons so that the base is part of the map then once the base is part of the map select the map and skybox and attach to the frame

I would strongly recommend learning to model. Like watch a tutorial of modeling a car or something. Then you will understand how everything works.

swap them in globals/globals and check all the appropriate boxes including the default ones, in sapien properties palate

Those are particles. Open any firing effect and you will see it has particles. You will need to make custom bitmap for it.
