is there a good way of doing this that actually looks a bit high quality unlike the ones on extinctioni also want it to fade pretty quickly

You'd probably want to have a slightly higher resolution contrail bitmap, and just set your own one up for it to fade in the manner you want it to. You could probably animate the contrail but I don't know how well that works, I've never tried it meself.
