3ds max highlights faces red and inverse faces dark red. polygons that are facing you will be red when selected and dark red when they are facing away. hit the render button and you will see that the faces are inverted.
aka that's supposed to happen

i dont know if its the same as gmax, but i remember when i used to flip a cube in gmax, i would be able to see inside of it. im new to 3ds max but pretty familiar to gmax.

once you deselect the flipped faces, you can see 1 of 2 things, depending on viewport settings:
1) the inside of the cube (with inverted shading and everything)
2) nothing (because the faces are flipped)
