record what and for what purpose?
if audio you need a program like audacity to record via microphone useing the input on you computer.

if video you need a camera or possibly a screen capture software most of which you need to buy

which is why camstudio is a better choice for all types for pc really.
you can adjust the quality etc, and that it doesn't give you massive files like fraps does.

i just don't see the point in using a secondary software ( adobe cs5) to make the quality better.
i would rather just record and call it done.

I disagree, camstudio is not a good choice.
I did some tests to find alternatives to FRAPS for Halo which can be found on my Youtube channel.
Camstudio basically skipped frames while recording in 1080p

Camstudio:

MSI afterburner:

MSI afterburner has my vote.

well just tried the msi after burner, but i prefer camstudio still.
but it does have some very cool features in there so it might be the better choice for other people.

Xfire video file sizes are through the roof. That always annoyed me when trying to capture stuff. Also, I believe the audio will eventually fall out of sync with the video.

It's too bad, because the quality is good.

Through the roof? Xfire's video sizes are quite small you know?!? That's the same when all videos recorded are uncompressed. Fraps video sizes are even larger!@

Might've just been me then. Each second of footage was 2-3 MB.

Let's see, a 1min30sec video was about 1-2gb for me
Say around 20mb per second. That's not a lot in terms of uncompressed video. Sometimes they're 30-50mb per second.
