This may not be of much help but...

tool gives me the following:

writing tags...done (2611 tags for 5.91M)
total tag size is 13.57M (9.43M free)

That is the important part. you still have another 9.43 megabytes of space left. When that number startes getting down to 1.0 to .5 megabytes then you should start getting concerned. These numbers also tell you a lot of other interesting things. such as you're using 5.91 megabytes currently and there is a total of 15.34 megabytes of tagspace total.

The bsp I'm working with is huge.

LOL. I once tried to do a SP on Hugeass and ran out of tagspace. It just depends on the kind of tags you use.

As for all of the shader stuff, if you do run out of space then go back and try to optimize as many shaders as you can, I'm not sure how much it will help though.

That's all of the help I can offer, good luck!

By the way, the "Forerunner Base 1" is a scenery model, but I'm thinking about converting it to bsp...it would add a few more faces, but I think it will improve the quality of gameplay... is that right?

I think so, having bases and just general stuff that the player walks on as the BSP is a good idea. Think of bloodgulch, the bases are attached to the ground there.

There's no easy way to tell the tag size of an object to my knowledge. Sorry.

Good luck on your map!

What really takes up tagspace in most of my maps are textures. I try to keep them at no more than 512 x 512. To tell what tags are being used in your map that take up space, I would compile the map and open it up with HEK+, cross-check the tags that were used with the tags in your tagset and basically right click every main folder to see the size taken up by that folder, and if you find a big file, just dig deeper until you find the culprit(s).
