There is a slot in the shaders for bumpmaps a just under the last detail map. The way to make the bump SHOW in normal light however is by using a cubemap and giving the texture brightness properties (bottom of shader environment) Bumps will always show if there is dynamic lighting on them such as flashlight or an object that eminates dynamic light, but the best way to make the normals show in any light, dynamic or not, is to use the cubemaps. Hope this is what you were asking here.

You can use photoshop and the nvidia plugins, I think gimp might have something but I am not sure, and you could also use crazybump. <<< HIGHLY recommended you know how to make a heightmap correct?

you can look up google for different bump textures and apply them to your own textures, you can also make your own bumps layer, *edit*its just a modification of the image and make it look like bubbles
my teacher taught me how to put it together with the materials but i forgot how to do them precisely,
you can look up youtube tutorials, i know they are a bit slow but you can skip forward then go back then pause and catch everything,
if your still inconfident look up the 3dsmax tutorial in the help tab or whatever program your using and search it in the index
i just saw that your post mentioned for shaders specifically i dont know if this helps you but i hope Edited by Wesker on Jan 1, 2012 at 02:18 PM

GIMP does indeed have a plugin for normals and bumpmaps but I can't remember what it's called. So if you use GIMP, just search the gimp plugin registry for a bumpmap generator. ;)

I use either gimp or photoshop, and just desaturate the texture that I'm working on. Then I erase some of the details that don't need bumped...
Run it through tool with 32bit color and change its type from default to heightmap(halo converts it to normal texture, did you know that?!) And set a height, then run it through tool again
You end up with a desaturated, low-fat, healthy, edible texture :D Edited by OrangeJuice on Jan 2, 2012 at 05:49 AM
