The GTX590 would have stutter(unless you sacrifice DX10-DX11 capability by using Windows XP instead of the newer windows) because it won't support Halo CE's Decal renderer, BUT you would have the ability to use NVIDIA 3D glasses, physX, and CUDA. And half of the major games are promoting NVIDIA right now
The 6990 is rumored to be the most powerful current-gen graphics card(pretty much best bang for its cost). With this you would have the ability to convert videos with AVIVO-HD that would put a dent on your free space, or otherwise be too big to upload to youtube within a single day. You would be able to run OpenCL applications also(and by the looks of that card, plug in a sh**load of monitors ^_^), I think you can also use NVIDIA 3D glasses with this card, but CUDA may not be useful.
With the pentium 4 that you have, you will put a serious bottleneck on those 2 cards, they will render tons of frames but then have to drop them because the CPU won't order them to present the frames to your screen fast enough for the cards to be satisfied. They are best if used with tri-core processors or better. Beware, without a good power supply, these will smoke(literally) your power supply, and probably unload itself into your motherboard.

i suggest GTX 590 and i think getting a cool new box could speed it up too, especially black ones. also try sprinkling some crack in your computer, worked for me.

I suggest Windows 7. It has the UI of Vista with minor changes and uses less resources. Edit: You need a new motherboard as well to use those components. Edited by Contrary Smuglord on Dec 24, 2011 at 03:14 AM

but isn't ultimate editions supposed to be better than home premiums? I don't see any use out of Ultimate versions of Windows unless you're a power user.

The motherboard would need a PCI Express 2.1 or greater slot on it,
And if you are gonna use that RAM and CPU, you would need a motherboard that has Socket LGA-2011, and supports DDR3

:O (you've never swapped a motherboard before) lol
Wellp, It is best to have a manual for the motherboard that you are trying to upgrade to(and in the worst case that the motherboard doesn't fit and you need to switch back to your old mobo after taking it out) and the one that you are getting rid of.
The first thing that you do when you are trying to transplant a motherboard is to detach the power supply from everything, and then unmount it and remove it form the case.
Then comes the videocard(if you have one), place this on a nice flat surface, or if you have some, an antistatic sheet or bag(like the ones that computer parts come in, they usually have black weave patters all throughout its design).
Then comes out all the other addon cards.
Then you unplug all of the extension cables(make sure you make a diagram of these, they are sometimes unlabled)
Then unscrew the motherboard and take that out.

Don't worry, the power supply is pretty robust :) , Back when I got my case(nzxt guardian, 2003) It was using nothing but trash and salvage parts, even the power supply. This part won't shock you unless you open it.
