okay guys i have found out i can add more than 24 materials
by using the multi/sub object material.
does this mean i have to start all the textures again, as i already have the 24 on the material editor balls?
also i saw somewhere else that i can put the materials i have on the balls, into the library, and they will still be saved. from here i'm under the impression i can then remove those textures from the material editor balls, and start fresh with adding new ones, while the old ones are saved in the library.
this right?

Right click the balls, cut, or copy, then right click on the multisub and go to the small tiny box to the left where it says the material # and click paste (paste as COPY!). If you need any help, go on xfire and I can teamviewer you.

if i have any problems i will have a chat with you about it on xf, or by tv, which ever is prefered.
