Well I discovered something while I was playing with this guy who beat me and 2 other guys miserably.
For my connection, which is a bit laggy, in order to actually kill anything with the BR, I have to lead my shots just a tiny bit. Not nearly as much as in Halo CE.
So I was in this game, and this guy was 1v3 us, I had 4 kills and my buddies had combined 3 kills. I tried leading my shots a little bit like in Halo CE, and I found that my BR shots actually hit. You only have to lead a tad bit, but still just a little to actually hit. I raised my kill count from 4 to 17 by the end of the game.

If the guy you were playing against was host or had a decent connection then he has a better chance of winning against three to four players because he has more targets, therefore more available points then your team will ever have.
The way it works out for me (with an average shoddy ping of ~130) is that sometimes I have to land up to twice as many shots. That is also why the only "glitch" I rely on is the quick reload so that I can keep firing more often even if I have to deal less damage.
When you play watch the ping of the server; 150+ is going to suck for the most part.
Plus with my ping energy weapons are seriously gimped, like all energy weapons (covenant that is) even a Beam Rifle may take three shots on some occasions. And trying to kill with the Wraith or Banshee, yeah good luck, so I play to my strong points and for the most part leave energy weapons for times where the lag is in my favor or other for other players.
Brute force is nessesary in this game but good strategy can go just as far depending on the gametype.
Much of this might be obvious to you but you sounded like you were new to playing H2V online so there ya go.

Yeah, but going from 4 to 17 kills against one player is a pretty big deal. Before I started leading (shooting a little bit to the side of the enemy to compensate for lag). In the past I would usually lose BR battles, even if I had a head start. Most weapons work fine, but the BR especially benefits from leading shots. At least for my connection anyways...

You don't have to lead to hit someone. I noticed this in H2V (cause my ping is around 270 in HCE). When you shoot at someone directly, they get damaged a while later, unlike in HCE where it will not transmit damage at all. However this will only work when the targeting reticle is red (I think). Otherwise, just lead the shots when it doesn't turn red.
