Before I tell you what I recommend, I want to say that when someone goes and posts you the link to sort downloads on this site from most to least, I recommend you 100% completely disregard that post. Those numbers have been found to be no where near what is played on the servers many times. Your best bet to see what is being played is to simply go to the server lists for v1.0 and 1.09 and don't let it filter out anything.

I also know a few people play on Coldsnap and Extinction still, but personally I will not recommend them because I Hate game-play that large. Just seems boring as hell to me.

I have to say also, for a great small game-play map, Salicreek, because it is just way more fun than regular beavercreek with that slight game-play change.

My recomendation even though I probably won't play on the server is h3style containment in my opinion it's one of the best h3 style maps

A few personal favorites of mine:

Downflow: A huge map, but it's actually a lot of fun, and well-designed at that. Much better than Coldsnap/Extinction/Hugeass imo. Also good for RPing if that's what you're into.

Blood Creek RC1/RC2: Ok, yes, these are Blood Gulch remakes, but they're serious overhauls and probably one of the most fun you'll ever play. Includes lots of custom weapons, and a working day-night cycle. Works for all gametypes. (Either RC1 or RC2 works, it's up to personal preference.)

Shot in the Dark: If you're looking for something to play Zombies on, this is it. A small map set in a Covenant ship, which is completely pitch-black except for the spawn rooms.
