Okay so before anyone asks, i made a layer mask and edited it to my liking, i hit alpha to selected, but when i disable the layer mask it turns the alpha back to white, and when i delete the layer mask it stays white until i add another and do it all over again. I am running windows 7 and i am using the latest version of gimp. So does anyone know what i'm doing wrong? Hope to hear back soon and get this working

Now in your layers box you see two thumbnails for the layer instead of one: the left one is the image in RGB, the right one is the B/W alpha. Right-click the layer again and choose show layer mask so you can see it. Click the thumbnail on the right and you're editing the alpha channel. So to recap: Add layer mask> transfer layer's alpha channel. You click the left or right thumbnail to work on the RBG or Alpha. You right-click and toggle 'show layer mask' for whether or not you want the alpha channel to be shown on top or not. Apply the layer mask before you save as a tif.

i do all of this and in guerilla it still has no alpha Set it to compressed with explicit alpha or interpolated alpha, not color-key transparency, and run tool again.
quick question am i supposed to put a line of blue around the top layer of the bitmap in gimp? That's only for sprites like ammo meters or muzzle flashes, so probably not Edited by SlappyThePirate on Aug 26, 2011 at 11:10 PM

First layer is the unwrap of the ground texture as a guide to where I should be painting. I hide this before I save as tif. The 2nd layer is the colour image of my ground. Areas coloured in shades of green and brown for grass and dirt. I followed your step-by-step, but my bitmaps alpha still comes out all white in guerilla. Please help. So you've compiled the bitmap tag, but the alpha is white in guerilla... in that bitmap tag change color-key transparency to either explicit alpha or interpolated alpha. Save tag, recompile over that tag. Tool should tell you that it was compressed with the alpha you chose.

I should have stated that I had already changed the bitmap format to compressed with explicit alpha.
Still no alpha though.

I never have issues with alpha channels and the gimp. It's very simple. Simply: Layer \ Transparency \ Add Alpha Channel
Highlight alpha areas Layer \ Transparency \ Color to Alpha - Select Black Color
If you don't have transparency in your image adjust the "Threshold Alpha"
Thats It!
